Finally, someone found a way to troll people on Chat Roulette AND make it part of a social media strategy. Someone give the people responsible for this...whatever award it is social media people get.
Maybe all that social mediaing had some positive effect, because shock of all shocks, the little horror movie that could, The Last Exorcism, actually won the box office this weekend, taking in an estimated $21.3 million. Given the movie's surprisingly level of quality, as well as its incredibly modest budget, it's amazing to me that this actually succeeded. Then again, right close behind (to the point where I wonder if when the exact numbers come in, these rankings will hold) was Takers, otherwise known as "Handsome-yet-terrible actors standing around looking awesome in suits: The Movie!" which took in an even estimated $21 million.
That knocked the two-week champ, The Expendables, down to third, with around $9.5 million. More interesting than that, however, is how terribly all the movies that debuted last week did this time around. Vampires Suck went from 2nd to 6th (though that still isn't far enough...), Piranha 3D had a Scott Pilgrim-esque drop from 6th to 10th, and Lottery Ticket, which debuted at number 4 this week dropped out on the top 10 entirely. Inexplicably, Nanny McPhee Returns and The Switch, which were the bottom of the barrel last week, held position, pretty much. What the hell kinda topsy turvy nonsense is all of this?
Outside of the usual top ten shenanigans, one big piece of news came from a movie that we've been watching ever so closely for a while now. The Toy Story 3 billion dollar watch is over, folks. This past weekend, the Pixar film's worldwide gross crossed the mark, currently standing at $1,012,126,000. Let's all stand up and give this, just the seventh film of all time to do it, a hearty round of applause. No, seriously, clap! DO IT.
Speaking of billion dollar babies, it's worth noting that, yes, the Avatar Special Edition hit theaters this weekend, and didn't make too much of a dent on things in the process. Granted, it only opened in around 800 theaters nationally, and out of that, managed a respectable $4 million intake, but it only debuted 12th, which you have to imagine is a little bit of a disappointment for Fox, given that it's the HIGHEST GROSSING FILM OF ALL TIME. But, again, that movie's original theatrical run ended less than six months ago. Maybe people just aren't THAT hot to go pay $16 to watch extended scenes of hot, digital Na'vi fucking.
Oh, who am I kidding, of course they are. Just click the link to go read the full list. I'm too distraught over here.
