Last Exorcism and Takers Split the Difference, Toy Story Hits a Billion, and Other Box Office News

Who are all these people that went to see Takers? WHO ARE YOU?

Finally, someone found a way to troll people on Chat Roulette AND make it part of a social media strategy. Someone give the people responsible for this...whatever award it is social media people get.

Maybe all that social mediaing had some positive effect, because shock of all shocks, the little horror movie that could, The Last Exorcism, actually won the box office this weekend, taking in an estimated $21.3 million. Given the movie's surprisingly level of quality, as well as its incredibly modest budget, it's amazing to me that this actually succeeded. Then again, right close behind  (to the point where I wonder if when the exact numbers come in, these rankings will hold) was Takers, otherwise known as "Handsome-yet-terrible actors standing around looking awesome in suits: The Movie!" which took in an even estimated $21 million.

That knocked the two-week champ, The Expendables, down to third, with around $9.5 million. More interesting than that, however, is how terribly all the movies that debuted last week did this time around. Vampires Suck went from 2nd to 6th (though that still isn't far enough...), Piranha 3D had a Scott Pilgrim-esque drop from 6th to 10th, and Lottery Ticket, which debuted at number 4 this week dropped out on the top 10 entirely. Inexplicably, Nanny McPhee Returns and The Switch, which were the bottom of the barrel last week, held position, pretty much. What the hell kinda topsy turvy nonsense is all of this?

Outside of the usual top ten shenanigans, one big piece of news came from a movie that we've been watching ever so closely for a while now. The Toy Story 3 billion dollar watch is over, folks. This past weekend, the Pixar film's worldwide gross crossed the mark, currently standing at  $1,012,126,000. Let's all stand up and give this, just the seventh film of all time to do it, a hearty round of applause. No, seriously, clap! DO IT.

Speaking of billion dollar babies, it's worth noting that, yes, the Avatar Special Edition hit theaters this weekend, and didn't make too much of a dent on things in the process. Granted, it only opened in around 800 theaters nationally, and out of that, managed a respectable $4 million intake, but it only debuted 12th, which you have to imagine is a little bit of a disappointment for Fox, given that it's the HIGHEST GROSSING FILM OF ALL TIME. But, again, that movie's original theatrical run ended less than six months ago. Maybe people just aren't THAT hot to go pay $16 to watch extended scenes of hot, digital Na'vi fucking.

Oh, who am I kidding, of course they are. Just click the link to go read the full list. I'm too distraught over here.

Box Office Results: 08/27 - 08/29

1. The Last Exorcism

$21.3 million / NEW
With a budget estimated at only around $1.8 million, you can go ahead and call this one a success. No, seriously, it's fine. I actually had zero desire to see this movie until I started reading more and more about it, and Rorie started gushing about it. I love a good demonic possession story, and this sounds like it's a good 'un. And that girl...so creepy!

2. Takers

$21 million / NEW
I guess I should have realized that this would do well, in spite of itself really, when the midnight screening I went to was actually something close to full. Full of chatty ass women who would NOT STOP cooing and screeching every time Chris Brown was on screen. I don't have enough room to get off on a rant here, but really women, Chris Brown? Did you just forget about the whole beating the living shit out of Rhianna thing? Or is that actually a turn-on now? Sheesh.

3. The Expendables

$9.5 million / $82 million
Not an altogether terrible drop off for our former two-week champion, though I am intensely curious to see how far it drops next weekend when movies like The American and Machete come along. And, you know, Going the Distance, too, I guess...

4. Eat, Pray, Love

$7 million / $60.7 million
You know, after this got beat by Vampires Suck last weekend, I thought maybe there was an outside chance this thing might tank this week. No such luck, it seems. Julia and her narcissistic self-journey through mediocrity shall remain with us for a while, it seems.

5. The Other Guys

$6.6 million / $99.3 million
I had to double check last week's list to be sure, but indeed, this movie didn't budge an inch from last week. Five then, five now, and it dropped a mere 35% in overall revenue. This peacock, it is flying.

6. Vampires Suck

$5.3 million / $27.9 million
As depressing as this movie's strong opening was for, well, decent society at large, I imagine the studio behind this dreck has to be equally depressed with this weekend's showing. Not that these movies are meant to have much staying power, mind you. I just figured there was at least one more weekend's worth of rubes to wring some solid green out of. Maybe we'll get super lucky and it'll just disappear next week, like Scott Pilgrim did this week...*sobs*

7. Inception

$5.1 million / $270.7 million
OK, now seriously Inception, you're just screwing with me now. You were 9th last weekend! 9th! Movies don't go up! They go down! It's the nature of the beast. I don't know what kind of devil hoodoo Christopher Nolan is casting on the Hollywood financial system right now, but we will never get rid of this movie. At this rate, it'll be in the top 10 until year-end awards roll around.

8. Nanny McPhee Returns

$4.7 million / $17 million
Yup, still cannot be bothered to care about this one in the slightest. Move along, nothing to see here. Please ignore the horrible makeup and miserable poster tagline. "Who's Your Nanny?" Really? REALLY? What fresh-out-of-college piss-ant marketing douche bag coined that one? Goddammit, I hate everything.

9. The Switch

$4.6 million / $16.5 million
Of all of last week's new releases, I had fully expected this to be the one to drop off the list first. Instead, it was Lottery Ticket, proving via scientific method that a combination of Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, and turkey baster jokes has way more staying power than Bow Wow, Ice Cube in old man makeup, and myriad terrible black stereotypes.

10. Piranha 3-D

$4.3 million / $18.2 million
A pretty disappointing second week showing for Boobs-and-Gore-Fest '10, but hey, the sequel's already been green lit, so there's that!

Dropped Out: Lottery Ticket (meh), Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (WAAAAUUUGGGGHHH!!!!)

The guy at 1:24 was classic.

Still bemused by Scott Pilgrim, I've heard a lot of people seeing that film more then once and yet it's still sort of struggling.

Not trying to say these guys copied me or anything... but ... I did this a few months ago kinda :

I suppose inserting the supernatural into chat roulette isn't totally original, but still.

Scott Pilgrim isn't even playing at any of the theaters around me. After one week it lost its screens to Takers and Avatar Special Edition.

Same thing happened to me. After one week, it just disappeared and we had to drive forty minutes to watch it in a theatre the next town over.

Makes me greatly depressed.

That's well done. McLovin @ 1:24 truly is awesome.

What's the word of mouth like on The Last Exorcism for everybody? I went and saw it because I liked the concept (and enjoyed it despite the ending), but most people I talked to about it thought it was stupid and wish they hadn't seen it.

Haha, that Chatroullette thing is hilarious.

Made Christopher Nolan planted an idea in our minds that we must continue to see inception.

@Alex: The peacock is flying? Come on Alex, don't go chasing waterfalls.

I guess I was part of that Scott Pilgrim financial problem. I still have yet to watch it.
Joeon Aug. 30, 2010 at 10:19 a.m.
I'm seeing Scott Pilgrim soon, I swear!
Everyones_A_Criticon Aug. 30, 2010 at 10:20 a.m.
It just seems weird to me that a Piranha is getting a sequel despite being pretty unsuccessful at the box office. Though it wouldn't be the first time a decent-performing movie gets a straight to DVD sequel, like Mirrors...
