Considering he's, you know, Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne, it was always surprising to me to see the man go to a TV show, but then it doesn't hurt that he picked one of the highest-rated shows on television for his recurring arc. It was his first recurring role on a television show since back in the heyday of Pee-Wee's Playhouse, but I'm sure that the moneybags he earned during his run was enough to assuage any trepidation he might've felt about coming back to the small screen.
All good things come to an end, though, and Deadline is saying that Larry Fish's three-season run on the forensic drama is over, as the actor has decided not to extend his contract. No word on a replacement for him yet, or if he has any plans to do more television; he'll next show up in Steven Soderbergh's Contagion.
Personally, I think he should be replaced by Elle Fanning as a Doogie Howser-esque child forensic genius. Why? Dunno, I just think it'd be funny!

Why can't Petersen come back?
Personally, at this point, I'd be happy if CSI closed up shop.
I never had any interest in CSI, but in 8th grade, my English class watched the version of Othello that he starred in, and everyone freaked out because there were boobs in the movie.
I stop watching when Peterson left. Wasn't there a some quote floating around the net that he was thinking about coming back? I sure hope he does.
Or like what @crimsonavenger said, just end it all together.
Please tell me he's leaving to star in a new Pee Wee series. I don't care if it's actually true, just tell me that it is.

No reason he can't, but it doesn't seem like he particularly wants to.
He is. He'll be in the Pee Wee movies, and the new TV show.
There, feel better now?
Blue pill jokes? really?
Wow, Elle Fanning would actually be funny yet amazing idea! Haha!
They're gonna be replacing the main lead Twice now! :/
I hope they replace him with some as equally talented and high-up in the celebrity department still.
I was going to make a joke about him moving into the adult movie industry, but it's probably too soon for that.
And obviously too late for that as well.

Seriously?! This is the best news I've heard all week!
Well, the season finale definitely left it open for them to be able to take him off the show, as there are people who are still suspicious of him killing what's-his-nut. They could easily just end up finding a piece of evidence to arrest him, put him in the slammer, and that's that. Still, with the last season, it felt like Fishburne was finally a part of that show that wasn't just overshadowing everyone else.

Peterson had a little quest spot this season. But he essentially phoned in his role, since it was a "webcam" shot.
