Legendary Voice Actor Mel Blanc Returns For New Loony Tunes Shorts

Wait--isn't he dead?

It's funny because the duck's just about to blow his head off.
It's funny because the duck's just about to blow his head off.

At first, the prospect of the old variety show you used to get at the movies sounds almost romantic . Imagine getting an “A” feature, a “B” feature and a couple cartoons, newsreels and trailers interspersed throughout. All four corners of entertainment, right? It’s an experience Grindhouse recreated so gloriously.

Thing is, modern audiences are nothing if not fragmented, so the variety show’s maybe better to imagine than to experience. It’s rare enough for people to like two separate movies the same way, let alone a whole bunch of shorts of completely different nature. I thought that Matrix short playing in front of Dreamcatcher was rad because I happened to like both stories, but I’m sure a lot of people in the audience saw it as eight minute delay of what they paid to watch.

I offer that food for thought because EW’s got word that new Loony Tunes CG shorts soon will be playing in front of certain WB features like Happy Feet 2. I expect it’ll all be copacetic, though. Shorts have been working real well in front of Pixar movies, haven’t they?

What makes this especially interesting is that voiceacting legend is returning to the Tunes. But wait! Hasn’t he been dead for more than 20 years now? The WB’s will be using some unused recordings by the man, as well as some novelty songs he did as the characters in years past. Call it a mash-up of old material and new.

Here are the descriptions of the new shorts…

Daffy’s Rhapsody: In the first of the new shorts, a persistent Elmer Fudd chases Daffy Duck (Blanc) on stage during a musical performance. The short features Blanc performing the song “Daffy Duck’s Rhapsody.”

I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat: A classic game of cat and bird transpires in Granny’s apartment as Tweety Bird goes to great lengths to avoid the clutches of his arch-nemesis Sylvester the Cat. The short also features the hit song of the same name, which was performed by Blanc, and sold over three million copies worldwide.

Untitled Coyote & Road Runner: Wile E. Coyote’s epic quest to capture the Road Runner continues in this all-new short. Will the Coyote finally get his paws on his elusive prize?

That is goddamn weird. That's Paula Abdul dancing with a cartoon weird. That's CGI Orville Reddenbacher weird. Makes me think of the last Chef episode in Southpark.

Kind of cool, I just wish they would play in front of a movie I actually want to see.

Ok normally I'd be against using CGI for Looney Tunes, but if it looks better than Cartoon Network's The Looney Tunes show then I guess I can't complain.

The concept of a CGI Looney Toons still makes me sick.

I'm pretty interested in this new Looney Tunes thing. The old school stuff was one of my favorite things to watch as a kid (even if some were just you know... outrageously racist).

Hey it worked for Gremlins II. Also Mel Blanc rising from the dead for cartoons is creepy...like super creepy.

What is with all the cgi hate, there have been a lot of good cgi movie's.

Well, that title certainly made me do a double-take.

Made me realize he didn't live to see or participate in Space Jam. Which is okay! He's in a better, Space Jam-less place, hopefully.

Mel's son, who has taken over the reigns, just doesn't sound right for me... And yes, the idea of CGI looney tunes is stomach churning... particularly given the fact they ARE using Mel's voice... If it was all new, with a new voice, then it would probably not be so off-putting...

this sound interesting , for a minute there I thought that he was actually alive and the title of this article reflected my perception .... Looney tunes , man has been a while since I saw something from it

I agree with this. And, judging the screenshot above, it doesn't look half-bad.

People don't hate CGI, they hate the idea of Looney Tunes characters being presented in CGI. Even in movies like Space Jam, they went with the Who Framed Roger Rabbit? style (though not necessarily the method), and it looks gorgeous, so I understand the reluctance to see those characters in CGI-format. Especially because they do look REALLY weird in a CGI format.

I thought they usually used Billy West for newer Looney Tune stuff.

Hopefully they'll be using full clips of him and not mashing up individual words like Chef from South Park.

Haaa :)
The looney tunes and their good ol' fashioned senseless violence!
Good times...^^

I love that Daffy Rhapsody, good thing they're finally gonna animated over it.
Too bad about it being CGi though...
