Logan's Run Remake Exists, Boasts Absurd Talent

Ryan Gosling starring in a sci-fi remake written by Alex Garland and directed by Nicholas Winding Refn? What God did I please?

The haircuts...they HAVE to keep the haircuts.
The haircuts...they HAVE to keep the haircuts.
Rumblings of a Logan's Run remake have existed for some time, but it looks like it's a thing that's actually going to happen now. Normally this is the kind of news that would turn my classic sci-fi loving spine to broken glass, but based on the talent that's apparently involved, I can't help but be deeply intrigued by the possibilities.

According to Deadline, Ryan Gosling is in final talks to inhabit the role (and hopefully the haircut) that Michael York made famous in the 1976 original. The film is working off a script adapted from the original novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, which was written by 28 Days Later and Sunshine screenwriter Alex Garland. As if that's not enough, it's being directed by the man who brought us Bronson and Valhalla Rising, Nicolas Winding Refn. Existential indie boner of epic proportions? Yep, I've got one.

For those of you who haven't seen the original Logan's Run (shame on you), it's one of those delightful little dystopian future romps, featuring a future society that lives inside a domed idyllic paradise, full of people who are ordered to die when they reach the age of 30. York/Gosling's character is a "Sandman," whose job it is to track down runners, who attempt to escape this fate. Then there are twists and stuff, which I'll leave to you to research or discover on your own.

Gosling and Refn have another film, Drive, set to come out later this year. The Logan's Run remake is currently scheduled to release next year. What do you think? You into this collection of talent taking on a beloved sci-fi classic like this? Or are you just so anti-remake that even the notion of this happening makes your blood boil? I assume that no reaction exists in-between...

I dont hold this up to be a sacred classic so I think a remake could be alright but you always have to ask why bother remaking it if it already exist.

Whenever I think of Gosling, I think of Young Hercules and that Suite Life on Deck-type show (I forget the name), but this could work for him.  I saw the original and I'd like to see an update with better effects.  Also, seeing the destroyed world would be cooler this time, too although I keep hoping someone will answer my letters and make a Thundarr the Barbarian movie.  I wonder who would play Farrah Fawcett.  My vote's for that girl in the next Transformers movie. (evil laugh)

Didn't think the original good enough for me to want it untouched. so long as there are still boobies, I'm ok with whatevs.

They must really be getting desperate if they are remaking something like Logan's Run. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the original, but I really don't think a re-make would have mass market appeal. Unless, of course, Nolan did it and turned it into something jaw dropingly extravagant, or even the Coen bros. Regardless, I'm still waiting for my Soylent Green re-make.

Damn not a lot of for classic like Logan's Run, crazy.  I suspect that is because most of you are two young to have to worry about riding  Carousel.     The writing talent sounds damn fine but Ryan Gosling is no Michael York.  Replacing Farrah is no challenge.

Hopefully there is some unexplored elements form the book or their twist that gives good cause for a remake.  Because if it is just better special effects or 3-D boobs then...

...WAIT!  3-D breasts, OK, I am on board.

Gosling AND Refn?  This sounds like sex in movie form.

I for one adore the original. How can you go wrong with "oooooooldd maaaaaaaaan". I could go either way with the remake as long as it doesn't try to be super serious and have a little camp to it.

I was named after the original Logan's Run so this holds a special place in my heart. In the modern context the movie doesnt hold up especially well (super cheesy special effects and the typical 70s Sci-Fi overacting) but with a more modern take this could be really great. Don't disappoint my namesake boys!

Unfortunately, I found the original to be largely unwatchable at this point in time. The terrible miniature work in the intro just doesn't hold up.

This sounds amazing. I am actually giggly... I am a loser.

Just saw the original Logan's Run for the first time just a few days ago. It is pretty good.

Logan's Run & Soylent Green are probably the two sci-fi classics I squeal the most over when referenced in anything. I really enjoy Gosling's performance in pretty much anything, & while I haven't seen any of Refn's work, everything I've heard puts enough faith in me that this won't turn out to be some chinsy over stylised Avengers style remake.

Bring it on!

Because making original plots is complicated?

Lousy hollywood writers... a strike...for this?!

I don't dig 28 Days Later or Sunshine. I have not read the scripts for those films, but I think they are just average. They both open great but start to suck at the tail-end of second and then all of their third acts, for me at least. So I'll have to disagree about the writing talent.

However even better than 3D breasts. A 3D recreation of the scene in which Box ( you know the silver robot guy) stares down the audience.

It's my job. To freeze you.

I'm so ready for this remake. Oh and to echo the other comments, yeah Ryan Gosling sounds great.

I would love to see a Soylent Green remake, I love the original but always thought it would have been great to delve deeper.

A great Sci-Fi movie that definitely would benefit from an update.  I know I know Hollywood keeps recycling movies and it does get annoying but this would be great. Throw in  Scarlett Johansson and her perky ta-tas and I'm sold.

@Mistress_Redhead:  I'd love to see one as well & I think that fiction has a wealth of places to expand upon, but the thing that always gives me is pause that the cynic in me feels a modern day remake would most like become incredibly stoic, politically focused, & maybe too heavy handed in trying to send a legitimate message to people today. I think the social commentary would be too strong to resist if somebody were tasked with updating it presently.

You make a valid point good sir, if it was remade, we would have to cross our fingers that they stick with the story rather than trying to force beliefs unto us.
