Known to nerds around the world as the trading card game to play and to everyone else as that thing those geeks are playing, Magic The Gathering is famous among a core group of people. After decades of booster packs, novels, video games, and international tournaments the game all about cards is now coming to the big screen. 20th Century Fox has taken the reigns and film rights for Magic and aims to turn it into a major film franchise. Simon Kinberg, who has pushed along the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises for Fox, has been tapped to helm this franchise as well.
On the surface, especially if you haven't taken the deep and geeky dive like I have a handful of times in the past, you would assume a card game to have little to go off of when it comes to creating a story around it. However with novels, flavor text, and 21 years of cards to go off of should make the task of a multi-movie franchise much easier.
For those who don't know the Magic lore is something like Lord of The Rings combined with an adult Harry Potter. In the game you play a Planeswalker who has the power to summon monsters and use spells to battle other Planeswalkers. Not to mention a variety of creatures beyond the typical Tolkien standard cast of characters. With even a small dash of imagination you could really turn this into something interesting. Now we have to wait and see if Hollywood still has a dash of imagination.
