"Mr. Potatohead! Mr. Potatohead! Backdoors are NOT secret!"
I've had to write up a few obits for this site and others in the past and I hate it every time: on Tuesday, July 27, prolific character actor Maury Chaykin died in Toronto at the age of 61. Among character actors working in entertainment over the past few decades Chaykin was a king. Not many performers in Tinseltown can boast to having worked on over 150 different film and TV projects over the course of the their career. If his breed of thespian is like a Swiss Army Knife then Chaykin was the model that's about six-inches wide. With a built-in chainsaw.

His curriculum vitae is ridiculously long, but highlights include: ornery hacker in WarGames; a thinly veiled Harvey Weinstein parody in Entourage; Major Fambrough in Dances With Wolves; and Sam Tipton, witness in My Cousin Vinny, among so many others. The header pic is from 1985's Def-Con 4, a Canadian post-apocalypse move that was one of Chaykin's starring roles. Rest in peace, man. The movies won't be the same without you.

I never knew his name, but I definitely knew his face. It was always nice to see him pop up in a movie.

I don't recognise that name, but I certainly recognise that face.

This is sad news.

On a side note: There is something about dying on one's birthday that fascinates me.
Perhaps due to my own dislike of celebrating them.

Sad news, have seen him in quite a few films and he was a talented actor. He will always be remembered for his performance in WarGames for me though.

Rest in Peace my friend.

Best Nero Wolfe, hands down.

His performance as Major  Fambrough in Dances With Wolves has always stuck with me as being one of the most memorable scenes in one of my favorite movies.

My favourite of his roles wasn't even a movie. In '96 he played Dr. Gonzo in a spoken word version of Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas alongside Harry Dean Stanton & Jim Jarmusch. It's beautifully done & well worth seeking out. RIP Maury, you'll be missed.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
