Meet The New Bourne Writer, Same As The Old Bourne Writer

Tony Gilroy to return to script Bourne Legacy.

Fan of the Bourne movies? I bet you are, as I don't think I've met many people who actively dislike them (although plenty of people have griped about Paul Greengrass's action direction in the latter two films). So it's probably good news to you that Tony Gilroy is going to return to script Bourne 4, which is tentatively titled Bourne Legacy. No word on the director or star, though; Greengrass and Matt Damon recently teamed up for the silly Green Zone, but neither of them seem overly eager to return to the Bourne franchise.

So, let's play the recasting game! I think it might be interesting to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt take over the Bourne reins; he's an excellent actor and he's going to get his chance to show off his gun-toting skills in Inception later this summer. Otherwise I think it might be interesting to see what Ryan Gosling could do in an action role. As far as directing goes, I think it'd be interesting to see what Kathryn Bigelow could do with the franchise; she has an aesthetic that I think might match up with the series fairly well. But what do you think, Screenedland?

I would hate to see Damone not be Bourne.  He just fit the part so great and I really don't think anyone else could meet my expectations.  Bigelow would be great I agree. Based on The Hurt Locker, I think she could add some serious tension to the series that would make the action (which is already great) even better.

I can see Bigelow do it, or who was the guy who did the first film?  I think this would be a movie Gosling should too since he's not exactly killing it at the box office and this can get him out there to large market if it's good.  He's a good actor too, but that movie he did with Hannibal Lecter just SUCKED.

Ehhh. I was only really into the first Bourne movie.
teh_destroyeron June 9, 2010 at 4:37 p.m.
I cast my vote toward Stephen Spielberg directing this time around, and I think maybe someone like Matthew Fox would be interesting in this role.
Kenshinon June 9, 2010 at 4:38 p.m.
Doug Liman or J.J. Abrams in the Director's chair and Chris Pine as Bourne. DONE!

Does anyone else think Joseph Gordon-Levitt can play practically any role?

I even forgive him for his pay-check role in GI Joe (okay, maybe not quite).
skiddon June 9, 2010 at 4:49 p.m.
Seems like I'm the only one who preferred the Greengrass ones, Identity really didn't do anything for me at all. Damon has always said that he'd only do another one if Greengrass was on board, so I guess it all lies with him.
@teh_destroyer: Matthew Fox would be interesting, though I could see pros and cons for him - in my mind he perhaps may not have the steeliness, or maybe I'm just too used to seeing him as Jack. Either way, I'd like to see him in a very different role in the future.

Good god.  I really like all the Bourne movies myself, but all the above "suggestions" sound terrible.  Both Gosling and Gordon-Levitt seem a bit "wimpy" to pull off a Bourne--they both look like kids.  And Bigelow, she was a bit over rated for the "Hurt Locker" in my opinion.  I really wound't want to see a non-Damon Bourne movie myself--do we constantly have to have remakes and reboots of less than 5-year old movie franchises?

I think Gosling could work for sure.

I liked the first one, read the books and immediately flipped my shit over the crapjob done with the movies.  The books are terrific and I don't know why the makers of the movies did not make them like the book.  People would have loved those movies and I wouldn't hate the people who made them.  My rant is over so you can go back to your daily activities.

No matter who they pick to play Bourne, I bet he won't match Matt Damon. He just nailed that role in a Christopher Reeve/Superman kind of way and I can't imagine anyone else living up to his performance.

Gordon-Levitt and Gosling can act but they don't have the physical build. My first choice would've been Clive Owen but then I remembered he already played an assassin in the first movie. So as an alternative, what you think of Sam Worthington as Bourne ?

Crispin Glover?   I KEED, I KEED!!!

yeah i like to see  Bigelow give the sires a shot. as for a new Bourne? i have no clue... come to think of it. i really dont want to see another Bourne movie. i hated the last one with a passion.

I would love to see another Bourne film but the last Bourne film closed it off pretty well that making another Bourne film would be ridiculous

I like JJ Abrams as a director.  How about a Josh Holloway as Bourne.  Or instead of Bigelow from Hurt Locker what about Jeremy Renner.  He was alright in SWAT as a rouge agent.

For my train wreck I might actually see just to see how bad it could be suggestion, I'd vote for Ben Affleck.  It would be sort of humorous to see how that panned out and what the movie media would think of such a thing.

Milla Jovovich,  honestly would be my dark horse - as she could probably use a better director and script - and a slower more realistic pace that the Bourne movies follow (At least by comparison) That and despite the fact she's in bad movies I still somehow like her.

In the end, I think the best bet would be to have a unknown play - find some new strong untapped blood and give them the spotlight. Chances are any new Bourne films won't reach the levels of the first - but if they are truly interested in turning it into a James Bond hand off torch game I think they really just have to roll the dice and give it ago.

In the end though, still calling it "Bourne" wouldn't make sense - aside from tying it to the originals as that was one of his aliases.

Matt Damon is Bourne, but I like Bigelow as director for sure.

If it's not damone I say hang it up, come back in a few years and re-launch a new bourne series.  Then do a better adaption of the actual book by embracing the the setting in the books, late 70's I believe, rather then the post 9/11 setting of the movies.  Also, the women character is basically a kidnapped professor if I remember right,  not some girl living out of a car that gets bribed to drive him.    I liked what they did on an action level, but I always thought the choice with the lead women, and even more so bringing the story up to the present was the wrong moves.

Kathryn Bigalow would make a killer Bourne movie. Yes!
oddjobon June 10, 2010 at 1:36 p.m.
It has to be Matt Damon, no else can play Bourne. Are they planning on this being a Bond thing, with a ton of movies and different actors playing the main character?
