Mel Gibson To Join Mad Men?

File under "will never happen but it'd be fun to think about".

Hey, he's already been in Mad Max. Mad Men can't be that much of a stretch.
Hey, he's already been in Mad Max. Mad Men can't be that much of a stretch.
How's this for a bombshell piece of news that will likely never come to fruition? Gossip columnist Liz Smith (via Studio Briefing) is laying down a pretty heady rumor: that Mel Gibson is apparently interested in joining the cast of Mad Men. Says Smith:

“Mel is a huge fan of the series and really wants in. Most experts agree that Mel’s movie career is kaput. I don’t quite agree on that myself, but some close to Mel assert that he thinks so himself.”

Um, awesome? If I was Matthew Weiner, I would totally bite on this, and then write Gibson a bunch of horrific dialogue that would make us all ten times as uncomfortable as Don Draper's "I'm not going to let a woman talk to me like this!" tirade from the pilot. Or maybe that would be too meta? What do you guys think of this? Would this make you more or less likely to watch Mad Men

More likely!

Tartaruson Sept. 22, 2010 at 3:15 p.m.
He will fit right in with all the racism, sexism and drunkenness.

But it would be kinda cool to see him in it.

Crazy. Mel Gibson wouldn't fit anyway he isn't anywhere near slick enough for this.
White_Silhouetteon Sept. 22, 2010 at 3:22 p.m.
Too easy..

Maybe as a re-occurring client, but definitely not in any major role.

I don't think a sequel to "What Women Want" is necessary. =P

A gossip columinist spreading a rumour that Mel Gibson really likes a certain tv show and needs the work! Quelle surprise!

I wonder what Perez Hilton's sources have established.

Well...

  • He's mad
  • He's a man

I don't see why not.
ryanwhoon Sept. 22, 2010 at 4:42 p.m.
I really hope so. If the Hollywood Js are keeping him from directing even though pedophiles are allowed to continue working, I would love to see him on Mad Men.

Uhhh, he does realize Matt Weiner is Jewish, just for starters, and that this is Mad Men we're talking about?

You beat me to it.  This was exactly what I wanted to say when I saw the headline.

Now this has to happen.
TheClapon Sept. 22, 2010 at 6:57 p.m.
Taking a triple A movie-star and making him a triple A television-star. What a good way to show that racism, sexism, violence, and intolerance will not be rewarded in this country.

I love Mad Men. Wait that doesn't sound right. Anyway when Mel wants to do something right, whether it be make a movie or hilarious phone conversation, he usually hits it out of the park (no pun intended). I could see him coming into the firm as a new dickhead partner or hooking up with Betty since she's been useless this season.
Gabrielon Sept. 22, 2010 at 7:54 p.m.
I might actually watch if he's in it.
septimon Sept. 22, 2010 at 8:06 p.m.
The more I think on this bizarre rumor, the more it makes sense. It would do wonders for Mel's perception, at least in terms of his ego in Hollywood. It would also generate buzz around Mad Men beyond the usual circles.
DrPockets000on Sept. 22, 2010 at 8:26 p.m.
Yeah, like they're going to let him do that.

Less likely definitely
