I am falling in love with Netflix more and more every day. Much of that has to do with the fact that the streaming service bringing back my favorite comedy of all time back from the dead which is…you guessed it, Arrested Development. They are also doing other quality work in the original content space as House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey and directed by David Fincher is also my most anticipated new television show of the season (The Following on FOX is a close second). While Netflix has made some missteps in the past and while they still need to beef up the content in their instant streaming library, they are truly starting to win me over…as a company…as a television network…as a bunch of people that actually get what the fans of Arrested Development want.
First of all, when creator and director Mitch Hurwitz realized he had shot more material than he could fit into a 10 episode order, did they force him to leave it all on the metaphorical cutting room floor to be seen only by the few people lucky enough to work on the new episodes? No! They simply allowed him to produce more episodes. Now, instead of airing 10 new episodes, there will be anywhere between 12 and 15. Amazing. I don't know that a network would ever allow that to happen and I might be getting sold on this new content delivery system. My AD excitement has officially increased, which I thought would not be possible.
Now, Netflix is also proving that they truly understand the brilliance of the subtle aspects of the show and what kind of bonus material fans will want to see. Go to Netflix right now and type in: "Girls with Low Self Esteem", "Mock Trial with J. Reinhold" or "Les Cousins Dangereux". You will actually find listings for the fake shows that show up throughout Arrested Development – "Caged Wisdom" and all. The titles aren't actually the shows (which would be even more incredible) but when played go to the moment in the series where the show makes an appearance. However, it is worth taking a look simply for the cover art and the descriptions. I laughed a lot.
These are the titles that have been found so far. Leave a comment if you find more!
"Girls with Low Self Esteem: Newport Beach"
"Families with Low Self-Esteem"
"Les Cousins Dangereux"
"Ready, Aim.... Marry Me!"
"Mock Trial with J. Reinhold"
"Caged Wisdom: Musings from Prison"
"World's Worst Drivers"
I've been re-watching the series in preparation for next summer and it is every bit as great as I remember. Why isn't it summer yet? Come On!!
Also, this is what I think I should make Rhodes wear when he watches the new episodes of Arrested Development so he looks smart and funny:
