Netflix Streaming: Coming Soon and Soon To Expire

Beware the ides of February.

 "Jim...watch...Over The Top...for me...before it's gone...."
I confess to sometimes letting this feature slip through the cracks, so from now on, expect an update on the new Netflix Streaming films and expiring features the 1st and 15th of every month. I've been poking around these lists for a while, and it definitely seems as though the 1st of the month is when Netflix rolls over a lot of their rights, which means that those dates are when a lot of new films both appear and expire. That doesn't mean that there isn't a bit of action in the middle of the months, as well, and, as such, here are a few lists highlighting new films and films you'll want to check out before they're gone!

To give you a bit of a taste, the soon-to-be-gone films include La Femme Nikita, Lethal Weapon 2, many of the original  Star Trek films, Air Force One, Catch-22, and The Warriors. We'll have to make up the difference with The Verdict, Daybreakers, Mesrine: Killer Instinct, Happy Gilmore, Please Give, and The Square. There's plenty more where that came from, however, so let's take a look at a more diverse sampling.

Netflix Coming Soon

1. The Verdict

Feb 28: One of my favorite Paul Newman roles, with a cracking screenplay from a relatively new talent, David Mamet.

2. Emma

Feb 18: Jane Austen? Charlotte Bronte? Emily Bronte? Hell, I was an English major, and I can't even keep all these novel adaptations apart.

3. Daybreakers

Feb 25: Vampires take over the Earth, and inspire tepidly-received major motion pictures!

4. Fish Tank

Feb 22: Another British film for the Michael Fassbender fans among you; he plays the boyfriend of a young single mother who apparently takes a liking to her daughter as well.

5. The Spy Next Door

Feb 19: Oh, Jackie Chan. No one will think poorly of you if you happen to retire. You're already in that awkward "Joe Montana playing for the Chiefs" stage. You're a Hall of Famer, dude; you don't have anything left to prove. Go coach somewhere.

6. The Last Station

Feb 20: Tolstoy's my favorite novelist, but even though the cast here seems to be great (Helen Mirrin, Christopher Plummer, Paul Giamatti, et al), I don't necessarily think a historical drama about his life would be all that interesting. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, though.

7. Me and Orson Welles

Feb 17: That Zac Efron is pretty dreamy, and I had no clue this was a Richard Linklater film. So maybe I'll check it out?

8. Standing Ovation

Feb 20: The tween High School Musical is finally, finally viewable in my own home, without having to risk being profiled by the guy at the video shop.

9. Kings of Pastry

Feb 22: A documentary about an apparently high-stakes French pastry competition, featuring what looks to be an inordinate amount of shattered sugar glass and weeping men.

10. Down Terrace

Feb 17: A crime comedy that looked pretty understated, is all I got from the trailer.

11. Happy Gilmore

Feb 23: Ah, back in happier days, when Adam Sandler could make shit jokes and they were still mildly amusing.

12. Mesrine: Killer Instinct

Feb 22: It's been a good couple of years for French films, and this seems to be one of the best, if the critical reception is to be believed.

13. Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer

Feb 24: I bet Spitzer just dies a little bit inside every time someone watches this movie. How'd he wind up on CNN, anyway? Is that like the male version of doing a sex tape and getting your own Bravo reality show?

14. Hellboy

Feb 26: Fond affection for one of Del Toro's more commercial, but fun films.

15. Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel

Feb 20: I'd like to see Hefner as an actual rebel, as in wearing a beret and smoking a cigar and fighting against the capitalist scum while trying to manage his relationship with a set of triplets.

16. Until the Light Takes Us

Feb 20: Norwegian black metal documentary. That's probably all a few of you need to hear to be queueing this up already. Alex liked this a bunch.

17. Strange Days

Feb 25: It's odd, but even though I love some dystopian sci-fi, I've never been an amazingly huge fan of Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days. I know many who swear by it, though, so check it out.

18. Please Give

Feb 28: I watched a bit of this on Blu-Ray and it struck me as New York Indie Movie #284.

19. The Square

Feb 24: Well-written, tautly directed, fine acting, but this thriller still struck me as a bit too by-the-numbers. Still, definitely worth a watch.

And in the Expiring Soon category for March 1st:
  • All of the Star Trek films, it would appear, except perhaps for the newest one.
  • Rain Man
  • La Femme Nikita
  • On The Waterfront
  • His Girl Friday
  • The Kite Runner
  • Lethal Weapon 2
  • The Elephant Man
  • Pierrot Le Fou
  • Air Force One
  • Catch-22
  • Five Easy Pieces
  • Rosemary's Baby
  • The Saint
  • Go
  • Over The Top
  • Homicide
  • Spice World
  • Battlefield Earth
  • The Negotiator
  • Top Gun
  • The Warriors
  • SLC Punk!
  • Universal Soldier

And a few films that will be expiring a bit earlier than that:
  • Cloak and Dagger: Feb 28
  • Falling Down: Feb 22
  • The King of Kong: Feb 28
  • Donnie Darko: Feb 21
  • In The Line of Fire: Feb 21

I'm going to have to throw out a big recommendation to anyone who hasn't seen the movie Go. It's good fun and is soooooo late 90's it's awesome!

Me and Orson Welles is my favourite film of 09, Christian McKay is brilliant as Orson Welles and it was the film that made me take Zac Efron seriously.

I like Daybreakers.

That Tolstoy movie might be interesting. He turned into a huge dick near the end of his life. He wouln't let the woman who bore his children and transcribed his novels past his entourage to talk to him as he was dying. Also, near the end he claimed that human beings should give up sex and end the human race by no longer procreating.

Revanche is expiring tonight. It's pretty good! Watch it if you have time!

The King of Kong is so fantastic. I highly recommend anyone who was even tangentially interested to check that out. It was way better than I expected. I caught it one Saturday afternoon on a whim and enjoyed it a lot. It's a perfect Saturday/Sunday afternoon movie.

His Girl Friday is my second (sometimes first) favorite movie ever.  I've seen it a million times and I'll see it as often as I can until I die.  If you have the time, I suggest checking it our before it disappears from Instant Streaming.  The dialog is very quick so pay attention.

Me, I'm just bidding my time until The Spy Next Door is up.  Ah, Jackie Chan and preschoolers.  How could this idea not work?!
JoelTGMon Feb. 15, 2011 at 6:39 p.m.
hm, nothing too interesting.  How do I find out the Canadian version of this list?
Ronaldon Feb. 15, 2011 at 7:57 p.m.
I have so much to watch on my Instant Queue, starting with the 4th season of Battlestar. And all of Buffy. Meanwhile, my DVR has about 40 show on it I need to watch, so I am way behind on things.
SaucyJackon Feb. 15, 2011 at 8:02 p.m.
I need to watch SLC Punk soon. It's been in my queue for a while.
Landonon Feb. 15, 2011 at 8:06 p.m.
I think Daybreakers is a cool movie. I never finished it, so I'm glad I'll get a chance to finish it.
Slayericon Feb. 15, 2011 at 8:10 p.m.
@SaucyJack: Heh, I watched it earlier after I saw it was on the list. I had a "lol wut?" moment when I saw Jason Segel was in it and laughed even harder when I saw his character. That movies great fun!
smartoonkidon Feb. 15, 2011 at 8:14 p.m.
The spy next door wasn't that bad.  Good Police Story-esque fight scenes
MisterMouseon Feb. 15, 2011 at 8:33 p.m.
might want to see Fish Tank... the trailer looked cool when it came out.
FLYmeatwadon Feb. 15, 2011 at 9:26 p.m.
Have to watch  Pierrot Le Fou and Spice World before they go, most especially the first.

Also, good to know I can now watch Standing Ovation. I wanted to check it out, but the fear of Netflix shipping judging me is too much! Instant Watch only judges the cyber me(atwad,FLY).
InfamousBIGon Feb. 15, 2011 at 9:33 p.m.
So a lot of good movies are leaving, and a lot of bad movies are incoming?  Fuck.
alaskagrpwnon Feb. 16, 2011 at 1:55 a.m.
The Last Station was fantastic. Great score, too.

Check it out, Rorie.

Good riddens to Catch-22. That film was an abomination. But this might give me a chance to see Killer Instinct now.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
