Netflix Streaming: New, Coming Soon, and Soon Expiring!

Chicks dig the big list.

Ichi The Killer is...an experience. And this guy's not even Ichi.

There are few things that have become as large a part of the cultural zeitgeist in 2010 as Netflix Instant Streaming. Tool for streaming entertainment or vessel for cinematic democratization: whatever your conception of it, there's always stuff appearing and disappearing from the service. Luckily, we're here to guide you through those minefields with a bevy of lists describing only the most notable films among those that are coming and going. Enjoy, and hit the break for more lists!

New On Netflix: Available Now

1. Exit Through the Gift Shop

The movie all your hip friends have been raving about is finally on Streaming. Check it!

2. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

The most ridiculously-named movie of the last couple of years is finally available for easy viewing.

3. LOST

The sixth season of the seminal sci-fi series seeps onto Snetflix. Sorry I shan't sustain this, so sorry!

4. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work

Raves abound for this bio-doc about the unfortunately facelifted E! entertainment fixture.

5. Ichi the Killer

Miike's incredibly weird film about a man who kills people with his boots. Watch it with an empty stomach.

6. The Money Pit

For some reason I have fond memories of this film, even if I don't remember Shelley Long being good in much of anything beyond Cheers. Oh, and those Brady Bunch movies; she was all right there.

Netflix Expiring Soon!

1. The Rock

Dec 18: Winners go home and fuck Nic Cage. Wait, is that the right quote?

2. Sense and Sensibility

Dec 18: I possess neither. Will I like this movie? I have so little time to decide!

3. Torchwood

Dec 20: Everyone's favorite bisexual adventure story is leaving streaming, alas. Get your groove on while it lasts.

4. Iron Man

Dec 27: We've all seen this by now, but it's still one of the bigger films on streaming, so it's a shame that it's coming down.

5. Archer

Dec 15: You only have ONE DAY to check one of Alex's favorite animated TV shows!

6. Blue Thunder

Dec 26: Roy Scheider can't do a loop in a helicopter...CAN HE???

7. The Seventh Seal

Dec 21: If only because it's engendered a number of incredibly pretentious references in the decades since its release, it's worth checking out Bergman's masterpiece before it leaves Netflix.

8. 3 Ninjas

Dec 21: I don't know why I put this on here. It's fucking terrible. I also totally hate it when Arabic numerals are used in movie titles. Three Ninjas, please.

9. Inland Empire

Dec 16: One of Lynch's stranger films (and that's saying something) is apt to disappear if you don't watch it this week.

Netflix Coming Soon

1. Shutter Island

Dec 31: A lot of mixed opinions on this one. Whether you loved it or hated it, it's still worth at least one re-viewing, and you'll get your chance on New Year's Eve.

2. A Prophet

Dec 18: Last year's excellent prison-house drama has an amazing final shot. It's rough viewing at times, but has some great performances.

3. I'm Still Here

Dec 23: I'm Still Probably not going to watch this.

4. Chicago

Dec 24: Kind of shocking that this movie won six Oscars (including Best Picture) and made a ton of money ($170 million). Its run-away success probably spurred the development of any number of musicals in the rest of the decade, so there's that.

5. Predator 2

Dec 24: Truly one of Gary Busey's finest performances, soon to be available in your living room.

6. Rosemary's Baby

Dec 28: I'm still of the opinion that the ending to this movie kind of kills it for me. But I bow to the conventional wisdom. Well, actually I don't.

7. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead

Dec 15: Clever title for a movie that apparently stars Devon Aoki and Ralph Macchio. Not a good sign.

8. The Extra Man

Dec 16: I kind of detested this movie for a lot of reasons, but now you can give it a chance yourself with almost no obligation beyond a little bit of time.

9. Time Bandits

Dec 20: One of Gilliam's best movies, a charming little tale of imagination and dwarves.

10. Eyeborgs

Dec 20: Finally, you can catch up with the film that almost permanently damaged the brains of Alex and I when we actually filmed ourselves watching movies. Ah, the days before The Screening Room.

11. Soul Kitchen

Dec 21: Another movie that didn't click with me. Maybe one of you will find more entertainment in the prospect of watching a German man grasp his back and making funny faces.

12. Kelly's Heroes

Dec 22: One of Eastwood's starring roles in between the Man With No Name and Dirty Harry. Fun little war movie!

13. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Dec 22: Just in time for Christmas!

14. City Island

Dec 23: One of Andy Garcia's best performances, apparently. This looked like just another "independent movie about a quirky family", but maybe I'll check it out now that I can do so with the minimum amount of effort.

15. Countdown to Zero

Dec 23: Documentary about nuclear weapons. Sure to be enlightening, if not entirely uplifting.

If only that material would make it the Canadian Netflix. Its always super depressing when I hear that a film I want is up on Streaming, but only available on the US Netflix.

Finally!  I missed it in the theater, but now I can see Hard to Watch: based on the book "Stone Cold Bummer" by Manipulate.

Um... I mean... Precious.

Side note: Ichi the Killer is amazing.  It's a comedy, folks!  (sort of)

City Island is a movie a friend told me he saw, a friend who is not....the most open to films (or at least I had thought).

I might actually watch it, write up a b-log.
MarkWahlbergon Dec. 14, 2010 at 4:30 p.m.
Oh hey, didn't even realize A Prophet was on Netflix. Better get on that.
ZombiePieon Dec. 14, 2010 at 4:33 p.m.
Miike films are not for me. Precious was a great movie despite its ridiculous title.
handlason Dec. 14, 2010 at 4:33 p.m.
I just saw Cronos on instant streaming.  Great movie.

Precious and Gift Shop, in you go. Wait patiently. I'll frantically watch you back to back only once I've realized you're about to expire.

Does anyone know if the whats available for streaming on Netflix is different in the Canada than in the US?
buckyon Dec. 14, 2010 at 5:57 p.m.
Are they just taking all of the David Lynch films out one by one?
oddjobon Dec. 14, 2010 at 6:49 p.m.
Doh! I just started watching Archer too. Oh well.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
