Update: Here is the text of the introduced bill right here.
For years my dad has always said it would be much easier, possibly cheaper, and more convenient if you could simply pay for the channels you watch on cable. Think of the hours and hours you haven't spent watching ABC Family, Lifetime, or MTV2. Word around Capital Hill says Senator John McCain (R-Ariz) will be announcing a new bill that could create that pick and choose cable television my dad envisions over a decade ago. The exact details have yet to be revealed but supposedly it will allow consumers to purchase the channels they choose and not just one bundle or the other.
The bill would also punish networks that move to a pay only cable like system. After services like Aereo allowed customers access to digital over-the-air networks some of them were ready to go to a full on pay only service. Now the US could be able to strip any network of their license to broadcast. It makes sense since most of those same networks were given the airwaves to broadcast on my the US government and that's why most networks have to abide by FCC rulings and air presidential debates.
This bill isn't a slam dunk since most TV networks will fight it tooth and nail against it.
