New Riddick Installment Shooting This Summer?

Decisions, decisions.

Talking about Fast Five getting Oscar buzz. Working for scale to make art. Let's not forget the last time Diesel went truly method for a part.

The situation isn’t exactly analogous, but I nevertheless couldn’t help but think of that whole “Should’ve took the money, Toombs” exchange while reading the Facebook post below. Most times, when somebody’s doing a status update, it’s about the livestock they just acquired on Farmville or about how they’ve found their top five profile stalkers (and so can you!) When Vin Diesel posts on his account, it’s about shooting a movie.

GRRRR..
D T the writer/director just landed in New York with the good news. We can start filming this summer. However, there is a catch... in order for us to make a true R rated film, I must work for scale upfront. Not unlike the "Find me Guilty" experience (which I wouldn't have changed for the world)...
Money is always second to art, integrity and spirit... but the real issue is deeper. Can I suspend my life, to momentarily venture to that dark place... called Riddick.
Now, I need to hear from Our collective... you.
Wisdom and clarity appreciated.

While movie #3 has been in development for at least seven years, now, I like to think this was prompted by our features on Riddick during religious sci-fi week.

For the record, Find Me Guilty was a criminally underrated movie that let Vin actually play somebody who wasn’t a convict for once… oh wait, well Jackie DiNorscio was on trial for mob racketeering, so it still technically was… but you get what I mean. He got to do a different kind of role in a Sidney Lumet courtroom drama/comedy that slyly satirized people’s unhealthy sympathy for gangsters. A nice change of pace, so of course it grossed less than $3 million worldwide.

Anyway, were I part of Vin’s FB collective, I’d obviously say, "DO IT!" You hear so often about celebrities walking away from movies with back-end deals that net them upwards of $50 million, yet they still fret about how they don’t get to do the roles they want. You wonder why they don’t finance those dream roles themselves more often. This isn't quite like that, but it's close, so good on him if he puts his money where his mouth is (literally.)

I think a tighter budget and an R-rating is the best for Richard B. Riddick, right now. It might even win back some fans who thought the last Chronicle got too big for its britches.

Yes! Bring it on, been waiting eagerly since 2004, I want an improved sequel now!

VicRattleheadon May 25, 2011 at 3:25 p.m.

This has to happen. It has to.
Zidane_24on May 25, 2011 at 3:26 p.m.
I always thought that Chronicles should have been R-rated, and now it may be happening! This is great news all around.
StealthMaster86on May 25, 2011 at 3:29 p.m.

I can always go for a new Riddick movie. Just don't make it like last time.
Toxin066on May 25, 2011 at 3:30 p.m.
I thought Vin was just a muscle head, but the more I hear about him, the more I think he's a pretty cool dude.

what dose work for scale upfront mean?
Zaccheuson May 25, 2011 at 3:33 p.m.
@zaccheus said:

I hate this movie because it killed Riddick as a character. No one is going to make a Riddick movie after this shit which is a shame. Pitch Black was great.

Loove to be wrong.

@MrMazz: It basically means that you work for the bare minimum salary allowed under the Screen Actor's Guild, something like a few hundred bucks a day. That's his up-front, guaranteed pay. He'd get a percentage of the profits of the film, though, so he'd still be making money...unless the film is a huge bomb.

I would love to see how this turns out. There was a few things I didn't like about the second movie but overall I still think its a damn good film.
Xpgamer7on May 25, 2011 at 3:49 p.m.
Diesel sounds a little...weird.
Mentoon May 25, 2011 at 3:53 p.m.
If he can get a percentage of the gross, since it's not like anyone else can be Riddick at this point and he has a while to wait until they can cajole that five year old into writing another Fast & Furious, it might still be in his best interest to make this movie. It's still a series with a considerable fanbase (I'd have thought), so even as an R-rated movie it'll do just fine with the DVD sales, if not in theaters.

@xpgamer7: He's a pretty big dork down inside.
zoozillaon May 25, 2011 at 5:09 p.m.
After saying all that, he can't not do it, right?
Creigzon May 25, 2011 at 5:25 p.m.
I like this. Chronicles of Riddick wasn't bad at all, and I loved Pitch Black
JCgameron May 25, 2011 at 5:27 p.m.
You know.  I kind of want to see this series completed.  I sort of liked the first Riddick, and think it could be a cool series.  Take my enthusiasm with a grain of salt though, I would also like Silicon Knights to finish the Too Human trilogy as well.

Rated R for Richard Riddick.

I agree thay we, as a community, can claim responsibility for this news. Great work, guys!

I'm excited for this. I really liked Pitch Black. The animated cartoon was way better then I thought it was going to be. Plus I thought the Chronicles of Riddick wasn't bad.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
