No More Weeds

The fan favorite is coming to an end.

Showtime has announced that the upcoming season of Weeds will be the last. The show that centers around Mary-Louise Parker as a mother who sells pot, will end after an impressive eight season run. While the show has a large and devoted fan-base it has become pretty widely known that creatively it has plummeted the past several seasons. Season Eight will pick up where the big cliffhanger from Season Seven left off, and with the series' end in sight, storylines will start to get some closure. The good news is it means the writers will have time to really write a conclusion and give it the ending it deserves.

This news creates an interesting situation for Showtime, as Dexter will also most-likely be ending after its eight season. The seventh season on Dexter will begin airing on September 30th, but the writers and the network are preparing for its demise after two more rounds. Weeds and Dexter have been extremely high rated shows for the pay-cable network and both of them really helped get viewers to start subscribing to Showtime, allowing it to begin competing with other networks, such as HBO.

The younger drama Homeland will be coming back on air for its second season at the end of September, which has been a huge hit and the highest rated freshman drama ever on the network. They still have comedies such as The Big C, Nurse Jackie and Shameless, but none of those have ever been as widely popular as Weeds or Dexter. They also have several pilots about to come out, so here is hoping that there is something else great coming for Showtime, but no matter what they are, they will all have a tough act to follow if replacing these stellar shows.

It lasted a long time for a showtime original.

Bout time, it was getting quite stale.

I might be in the minority but I feel like this show has been pretty great all around for most of its existence. Hell, we even got Albert Brooks & a younger Julie Bowen for part of a season. I'll be sad to see it go. I think most of the series is on Netflix Instant so go watch!

It's been my favorite show on TV since the beginning. I really hope they go out with a great ending.

Does this mean Showtime shows will start getting some attention on the site? My favorite show on right now is Shameless US, and I'm not sure I've ever seen a Showtime show included on 'What to Watch.'

Didn't that show just devolve into showing Mary Louise Parker naked as much as possible? I mean, I can't complain about that because...ya know...Mary Louise Parker is fucking hot. At the same time, the first two seasons of that show is all I could watch. I just couldn't get into the third season, so I stopped there.

Yeah, she has gotten nude a few times in the last few seasons. Definitely not complaining though as she's pretty smoking.

I just can't understand why they gave this another season at all. The last one was terrible, but it managed to wrap things up pretty neatly in the last episode but NOOOOO.

But maybe I'm bitter. After season 3, the series turned into something I didn't enjoy watching in any way.

Couldn't get past the middle of season 2. It featured one of the largest collections of completely despicable characters who do infuriating things. Silas for example is a complete psychopath who forces his seed into a deaf girl and tries to knife her father, then he gets his own mother into a situation where she might be killed by gangbangers.

And I'm supposed to root for that family?
