Nolan Wants To Make A Howard Hughes Movie, Huh? He Must LOVE Psychotic Billionaires

Hughes and Bruce Wayne ain't that far off... in many senses.

This screenshot from the Simpsons was the best illustration of Hughes in his later life. I'm not sure what that implies..

You know… my reaction to this news from Vulture probably explains (on the small, personal level) why we’re inundated with “pre-aware” franchises these days. Christopher Nolan hasn’t disappointed me - - not even once - - in every movie he’s made since Memento. He’s earned my respect many times over, yet my reaction to him eying an adaptation of Citizen Hughes as his next project after The Dark Knight Rises is, well, honestly lukewarm.

If he wanted to do, say, Inception 2 or a Flash movie once he was done with Batman, then I’m sure my first reaction would be a lot more excited. It’s simply easier for a fan to get amped up about something he’s already familiar with. Take that to its macro extreme and you wind up with a summer like this, where all but a couple of the big movies are sequels... because that's what viewers get jacked-up the most about.

Of course, I remember my first thought about the Prestige was “Seriously? A period piece about magicians?!” and the flick ended up being one of my all-time favorite movies, so I’ll give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Even though I think the Aviator is still fresh enough on our minds that a movie focusing on Hughes bat-shit crazy latter years might still feel like double-dipping… I’ll trust that Nolan's got a damn good angle on it.

Marty already did a fantastic job with the Aviator. Nolan's a great director, but seriously what could he do that Scorsese didn't?

On board with you on that. He would probably cast Leo as well, so essentially it would be the same damn movie!

Crazy talk, Tom! This sounds significantly more interesting than an Inception sequel or another superhero movie. I wasn't at all fond of Scorsese's The Aviator, so I am excited about the prospect of Nolan bringing more depth and insight to Hughes.

That'd be hilarious if he actually did.

Well, didn't The Aviator focus more on his efforts in flying? This could be a prequel/sequel.

I liked The Aviator but it just seemed that it was missing a huge portion of Hughes' life and I hated how it completely avoided the fact that Hughes killed someone in a dui and pretty much covered all of it up

I enjoyed both The Aviator and The Hoax (granted, that was more surrounding Hughes than it was about him) and found the subject matter to be really interesting. I'm not really sure what else there is to explore in great depth, but hey, maybe Nolan's spotted something worthwhile here...

But, after reading brainboy77's comment, seems like there's a fair bit left! I stand corrected

Hmm I've never thought about it like that. Now I feel guilty for getting sucked into sequel hype and always poo-pooing on new ideas.

I wouldn't mind a remake of 1980's Melvin and Howard about a guy who picks up Hughes who's hitchhiking in the middle of the Nevada desert.  It's been ages since I saw it, but I remember liking it a lot.  Netflix has it if you haven't seen it.

@pat4327:   Christopher may be able to help find a picture that I have been looking for for quite a few years.  A picture I witnessed being taken in front of the Mint Hotel in Las Vegas,  It was of Howard Hughes with long hair and he was standing with Levar B. Myler,(a senior penthouse aide) to his left and John H. Meier, (his business adviser who is better known for his involvement in Watergate) to his right. My video is on  "Youtube" titled "Howard Hughes Looking  For The Picture".

Dig Deeper into The Dark Knight Rises

The third and final movie in the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, written by his brother Jonathan and due for release in 2012. The film picks up eight years after the ending of The Dark Knight.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
