Obeying The Speed Limit

A tribute to movie motorists that think safety first.

 Go, Flash, Go!
 Go, Flash, Go!
For those of us who are fans of safety and caution, it is always appreciated when a movie character drives a vehicle responsibly. Movie vehicles are designed to seem sleek, thrilling, and fast. They have roaring engines that pulsate a primal ferocity that borders on sexuality. However, when a character resists the overwhelming temptation to drive dangerously with a speedy vehicle, he or she must be applauded. Remember, children, reckless does not mean "wreck less." Two such outstanding role models of prudence are Flash Gordon from his eponymous 1980 movie and Sam Flynn from TRON: Legacy.

Interplanetary football hero Flash Gordon shows great restraint while operating a vehicle called a Rocket Cycle. When Emperor Ming the Merciless orders the destruction of the hovering Hawkmen palace, Flash barely escapes by boarding an emergency, rocket-propelled jet ski. A jet ski weighs around 745 pounds, and a rocket needs to travel fairly quickly to keep it airborne (at least 56 miles per hour). Nevertheless, Flash defies physics to fly safely, even wearing the safety bar. He travels at a moderate, golf cart velocity. The background behind him barely moves, and the wind barely tussles his flowing locks. The Hawkmen, who fly by flapping their wings, can out fly Flash. Adding to the drama are Ming's forces trying to shoot him out of the sky. Rather than race around in a panic, Flash continues to travel in a straight line at single digit speeds. He shows how fearless he is by traveling at reasonable speeds, taunting his enemy with a near stationary target. Although for safety's sake, he should probably wear a helmet.

Similarly, Sam Flynn, usually a brash young man, becomes judicious when he enters the virtual world of the Grid. When chased by real world police officers, he weaves his Ducati motorcycle through traffic and over ledges to escape. Not so in a computer. On the Grid, his father Kevin Flynn builds a stylish, white light cycle that appears capable of traveling at high velocity, including off road. Considering how a normal light cycle can collide with ribbons of light (implying it travels so fast that light stands still as a wall in comparison), this white light cycle is far faster. Kevin Flynn's disciple Quorra describes it as "the fastest thing on the Grid." Even though he is racing against the clock, Sam Flynn rides this light cycle at normal highway speeds, reducing this speed when reaching the streets of TRON City. He respects crosswalks and parks his vehicle properly in a city alley. Although for safety's sake, he should probably wear a helmet.

These two exemplars of reservation show that a movie character need not zoom about indiscriminately to be cool. Discretion on a swift vehicle is just as stylish as being hasty. Kudos to Flash and Sam for feeling the need for heed. Did I just type that?

lol. Nice article.

What is the point of these articles? They contribute nothing to the site!

Also, to quote the last sentence in your previous article " If skydiving is interesting, orbital skydiving is awesome... to the max. Did I just type that? " You used that lame joke twice in two consecutive articles. Was that supposed to be funny, or are you trying to make this a catchphrase?

EDIT:  Three articles in a row: ""You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling." Did I just type that?"

So it's a catchphrase. Great stuff... seriously.

God, that light cycle in Tron Legacy annoyed me so much.
Quorra sells it up as the fucking bees knees, the breakfast of champions, the fastest thing since sliced bread... so I'm thinking "okay awesome, we've got the hero, and we've got the fastest light cycle, only good things can come of this".
And then he just... deposits it in the city... and walks away... and gives away his father's location...

:/
Good job, Flynnster.

Apparently Alex's physical presence was the glue that held Screened together.  Later, guys.

Please don't go the route of IGN movies by pumping out these unfunny ironic articles like it's nobody's business.

I agree. IGN is crap for stretching out itself too far. Let's end this here.

At least there's someone out there who can respect the law not like those reckless Star Trek characters. They break the ultimate speed limit all the time. Do they not realise going faster than light is dangerous?

We're just trying out some new things and some new freelancers, so don't get too "sky is falling" on this one. By all means, though, if you dislike things, let us know.

FLASH

Ah-aaaaaaaah!

Seriously, though, this reads like something I'd expect someone to write while high.

@Rorie: I think it looks great. Just talking about minor details.

I dunno, of the random articles that've appeared over the last few days, this one was at least sort of entertaining. That said, I'd appreciate this MORE if it actually had some content significance; for example, it could at least consider what characterizing Sam Flynn as judicious in The Grid and reckless in reality could actually mean. I haven't seen TRON: Legacy, so I can't tell you whether it does or doesn't, but my guess would be that he respects only what he fails to understand. That, or it could be the difference between the one who lives and the one who observes, perhaps similar to Dante in The Divine Comedy. The Grid could actually make a convincing Inferno in that one, from what I know about it.

Anyways, that's all I really have to say on the subject as I've never seen the films being discussed here. I'd rather these have more significant content, whether it discusses what really makes that appealing (a la The Dark Knight article earlier this week), what makes it artistic/important to the story (again, The Dark Knight article), or, occasionally, if it can legitimately be connected to upcoming films (some of the speed articles have branched a little too far from F5.)

This is like a thesis paper I would write in English class in maybe freshman year, if not middle school. Seriously, there's a thesis, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion that ties everything together. If I knew I could make money writing articles like this, I would not be dead broke right now.

I dislike the concept and writing style of this article, it doesn't fit Screened and it isn't representative of what I want to see on Whiskey Media websites. Thanks.

Ya, the main character in Shoot 'em up (Smith) followed the rules of the road as well. He actually chased down a dude for being an asshole on the road and knocked him out if I recall.
Funny Scene, i thought.

That was honestly god-awful.
