The Americans was one of my favorite things on TV last year, in fact it was my second favorite thing. No freshmen series last year was so assured of itself from the get go. Go back and watch the first opening sequence as deep cover Russian spies, the Jennings family, take out a defecting Russian General – all set to “Tusk” by Fleetwood Mac. As the season wore on, it explored all the realness of the fakery, the Jennings have to do as part of their covers and their slow realization that, they actually might love one another.
Anchored by two riveting performances by Matthew Rhys and Kerri Russel as Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings, The Americans Season 1 was the marriage drama you’ve always wanted but with awesome spy stuff thrown in. Noah Emmerich as All American Stan Beeman deserves recognition as well for just how subtly and beautifully he played Stan’s slow decent. The Americans is also the reason I continually hope that The Millers will be canceled. I’m all for Margo Martindale making that paper but the lack of Claudia this season will be a very big gap.
Of all the things I am most looking forward to, it is what licensed music is used. Plainly: The Americans has some of the best use of period music in any TV series. And let’s not forget awesome bad wigs.
Not much has been said about Season 2, early reviews have said that where as last season was about being fake-real married, season 2 will focus on the fact that they are Russian spies with a family to raise. The Americans, its Parenthood with less crying and more stabbing.
The Americans returns with “Comrades” Wednesday February 26 on FX at 10 pm.
Side Note: Arrow is also back at 8 on the CW, expect coverage of both shows.
