At the age of 92, Ray Harryhausen, the special effects artist responsible for some of the most memorable scenes and moments in movies, has passed away. The story goes that Harryhausen had seen the 1933 version of King Kong with all its stop-motion special effects and began doing the same himself, experimenting with stop-motion in his parent's garage. His career is almost too long and too immense to list accomplishment after accomplishment or movie after movie. But it isn't hyperbolic to say without Harryhausen's work on Jason and the Argonauts, Mighty Joe Young, or The 7th Voyage of Sinbad we may not have more modern special effects today. His work helped invent new genres of film and open up the imaginations of film goers around the world.
