R.I.P. Seinfeld's Uncle Leo

Len Lesser succumbs to pneumonia at the age of 88.

 Goodbye, Uncle Leo.
 Goodbye, Uncle Leo.
Though his career stretched all the way back to the 40s and he had close to 170 on-screen roles to his credit, Len Lesser is certainly best known for his frequent guest-spots on Seinfeld as Jerry’s endearingly-obnoxious Uncle Leo. Sadly, The Huffington Post has reported that Lesser passed away in Burbank yesterday after a battle with cancer-related pneumonia.  He was 88.

Jason Alexander put some kind words out about his old co-star on his Twitter account, stating…

Len was a tremendous guy. He was a smart actor/comedian who knew exactly what he was doing in the creation of Uncle Leo. I enjoyed many wonderful conversations with Len who was so openly grateful to be part of our show and so humble about his stunning contribution to it. I am so happy to have known him and my sympathies go to his family. But his was a fun life and he leaves many fans behind and many who will be enjoying his work for years to come.

"Hellooo" Uncle Leo. And goodbye. Sleep well. Much love.

As mentioned, in addition to Seinfeld, Lesser also acted in impressive collection of titles in TV and film, including Get Smart, the Mod Squad, Amazing Stories and even the 70s Spider-Man TV show. He’d also notably acted with Clint Eastwood in two of his classic pictures, The Outlaw Josey Wales and Kelly’s Heroes, showing a range for comedy and drama.

From the Soup Nazi to the caricature of George Steinbrenner, Seinfeld obviously had a wealth of memorable personalities sin addition to Jerry and his regular pals. However, an ornery relative who’s constantly demanding your undivided time and attention was one of the more acutely-devised characters the show was famous for--everybody’s got somebody like Uncle Leo in their family, right?

I can’t think of a more appropriate way to celebrate Lesser's life and work than to include the following clip…

I honestly never found Uncle Leo that funny. Not to be a dick or anything, it sucks he died.

When you read about certain folks that pass on from a popular series body of work, you wonder, why such a small role.

He always made me laugh though.  'Your cousin Jeffry'...gets me every time.

Why are all these actors dying all of a sudden? WHY?

Take screenshot, desaturate, respectful post-mortem image complete!

If desaturation signals that somebody died, I wonder what it was like before color printing and television?

To be fair, he was 88. So its not that surprising. Still a bummer though. Absolutely loved him on Seinfeld.

It's very sad to hear that Uncle Leo is gone.  Thankfully we always have DVDs and Blu-Rays we can watch so we can admire his skill at playing THAT relative.  HELLLLOOOOOO to Len.
