Shane Black's So Near to Helming Iron Man, You Can Just Taste It

Reportedly, he's in final negotiations.

At least one of these guys will be dressed differently this time.

Following the earlier chatter about Shane Black possibly writing and directing Iron Man 3, Deadline’s reporting that the deal is all but locked. The lingering question now concerns whether he'll be writing the script, too. Sitting in the  “armchair producer’s seat” for a moment, I figure he’ll probably doctor whatever script they end up going with, but leave most of the heavy lifting to somebody else. Considering how he was angling to direct Death Note or Doc Savage as recently as a month ago, I figure everybody involved will probably want to expedite this.

Aside from all the easy jokes about it being pretty clear that Tony Stark’s third solo flick will more-than-likely take place during Christmastime, I’m still greatly intrigued to see how a guy forged in the straight-up action flick days will handle all this high-concept comic stuff. If the team does end up seeing the whole Ten Rings sub-plot through, I strongly suspect Black will opt for a heavily downplayed version of the Mandarin, if he decides to use the villain at all. I just don’t see Favreau’s prospective Palpatine-equivalent enduring with this guy on board.

The list of villains remaining in Iron Man’s rogue’s gallery is pretty wide open. Considering how one of Black's recently talked-about projects was the abandoned coming-out-of-retirement spy story Cold Warrior, it'd be cool if he amped up the whole espionage angle here with heavies like Spymaster or Ghost. Whatever he does, I’m sure we’re store for a much meaner edge to the humor this time ‘round.

This could be fantastic, especially if they wanted to pursue a storyline more centred on Tony Stark's self loathing, alcoholism, & head trauma.

I could see Black writing, depending on how long before the film would begin shooting, and since this would come after Avengers, that is going to be a while. Here's hoping Black makes Fin Fang Foom the villain.

I still want Doc Savage, damn it....

This is excellent news, I just look forward to it being cemented. And now I am off to watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang again.

Anyone who was a commando in Predator can do no wrong in my book.  I need to see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang so I will add it to my Netflix queue sometime in the future.

This will certainly be darker since 90% of the screenplays he's written are R-rated, with the exceptions being Last Action Hero and Monster Squad of all things.  As a side note, I've listened to the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang DVD commentary so many times I should probably just rip it into an mp3.

Shane Black...my enthusiasm for Iron Man 3 just dropped through the floor.  If you look at his writing credits it's pretty much a buffet of crap except for the first Lethal Weapon film.

I think this is pretty good news. I definitely didn't like Iron Man 2 as much as I did the first one. Hopefully some new directorial blood will make the third one better.

I'd read on other sites that "so close to" actually meant "is totally going to"
