So Just How Scandalous is It that Wrath of the Titans is Converting to 3D in Post?

They're planning for it from the get-go.

I kind-of wonder what would happen if you had 4D glasses with these three colors as guides...

Jonathan Liebesman dropped a few bombs in his interview with Cinematical (sadly, none were of the “F” variety.) Rorie discussed his possible lapse lingua about a 3D re-release of Inception, but we figure that the notion of him also being so committed to adding another dimension to Wrath of the Titans warrants some discussion in itself. The 3D conversion of Clash of the Titans was certainly the most reviled case of post-conversion outside of maybe the Last Airbender, but Liebesman insists they're doing it right this time by taking an "in-between" approach.

He chalks Clash 3D’s poor reception up to the post conversion being a last minute decision and says he’ll be having consultants on set to ensure he’s shooting, editing and framing properly for 3D. Seemingly in the face of that, he explains that he's doing this over actually shooting in 3D because he wants to preserve a filmic grain to match the grittier tone he’s envisioning.

I figure this question’s going to be the give and take for every tentpole spectacle from here on out (or until this fad ever fades out of vogue.) I specifically remembers Joe Johnston explaining that his choice between shooting Captain America in 3D and converting it came down to budget considerations. He ultimately opted for post-conversion because 3D camera rental prices would’ve actually taken away from the cash he would’ve rather spent on little things like sets and vehicles and so on.

3D is today's gristle for the grind, of course. I’m pretty indifferent to it, myself. Tron: Legacy was maybe the only worthwhile use of it for me, and I’ll always opt for a cheaper 2D show. Although, I’m curious… how many of you are actually getting that choice? I’ve been hearing that a lot of theaters are actually only showing the pricier 3D versions.

My theater only shows 3D versions. Most of the trailers for 3D movies will say "2D in select theaters".

"Wrath of the Titans"?
 "4D Glasses?"

uh someone should probably fix those.
Rorieon Feb. 24, 2011 at 2:42 p.m.
@DXmagma:  Wrath of the Titans is the name of the sequel. I think the 4D glasses thing was a joke on Tom's part.
DXmagmaon Feb. 24, 2011 at 2:43 p.m.
@Rorie:

...That movie is getting a sequel?
ChiliPalmeron Feb. 24, 2011 at 2:47 p.m.
@DXmagma: Clash of the Titans made a shitload of money. So yeah, it's getting a sequel.
MarkWahlbergon Feb. 24, 2011 at 2:50 p.m.
@DXmagma: HELL FUCKING YES IT IS.

I usually hate dumb action movies, but I'm one of the 3 people who actually enjoyed the Clash remake. Sequel's gonna be great. I can feel it.

Hate 3D !
The glasses give me a headache. I always watch the movies in regular format :/  it's a waste of money.

I really dislike 3D. I feel like it actually distracts from the experience rather than adding to it. I always opt for 2D and for the most part my theater has been good about giving me that option. I did want to go see The Green Hornet but they only ever had the 3D option so I never went. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay a bigger ticket price for something I'm really iffy on already. I don't like 3D but I respect those who do, just don't force people to pay higher ticket prices especially when it's for something they may not like.

I saw Clash of the Titans at the theater in glorious 2D. Still hated the movie. No interest in a sequel.

I have not seen a 3D movie since Avatar. If my theatre should stop giving me the 2D option, I shall simply not watch the movie there. I have no interest in 3D whatsoever.
MisterMouseon Feb. 24, 2011 at 3:24 p.m.
I could care less about a 3D version of inception really. Inception is already incredible, not need to add a third dimension to it.
tgammeton Feb. 24, 2011 at 3:56 p.m.
I saw 2 3D movies last year. Avatar twice. I would have seen Tron in 3D, but I never got around to going.

So far this year, the only movie I've seen in 3D is Tangled, and I don't regret it.

No other movie released last year, or this year IMO ever interested me in terms of seeing it in 3D. If that were true, and there were theaters not showing the 2D version I wouldn't go to that theater or flatly I wouldn't go to see that movie. I live in the San Francisco bay area though, so I have lots of choices. I know most people don't get the option of just going an extra block to a different theater.

I only saw two 3D movies last year (Tron and Gulliver's Travels), and after seeing them, I don't think I'm going to top that this year. I still err on the side of "fad'.
JCgameron Feb. 24, 2011 at 6:22 p.m.
Clash had terrible 3D. In fact besides Avatar and the computer animated movies, I haven't seen a good 3D movie (thought Tron's 3D was useless as well).
HadesTimeson Feb. 24, 2011 at 6:44 p.m.
It isn't so much scandalous as sad.  Hasn't Hollywood figured out that you can't just slap 3D on to something and it do well? Guess not...
Jay_Rayon Feb. 24, 2011 at 7:12 p.m.
My theaters don't offer me a 2D option on 3D films. For some films this is ok (eg. Tron and Toy Story 3) but most 3D movies are done poorly and I do not want to see them in 3D (if at all).
YukoAshoon Feb. 24, 2011 at 9:17 p.m.
Don't think we have any 3D-only theaters in my neck of the woods.  Doesn't matter to me, I usually just buy the regular Blu-Ray.  You ask me, 3D takes away more than it adds.
SARRISSon Feb. 24, 2011 at 9:19 p.m.
I seldom see movies in theaters anymore because it takes forever for the 2d to be offered, I can't stand 3d its one more set of glasses I don't want to wear. Its never been the money to scare me away, I go expecting to spend money so I really don't care I drop more money, in fact if I could pay more for a 2d show on the release week I would.

If I do go its months after release and only days before its pulled from theaters as thats when the 2d is available. Mind you this is in a city of 10 theaters and still this happens.

I haven't had a problem with theaters only showing 3D movies until this weekend. No theater within 50 miles is showing Drive Angry in 2D, so now I'm forced to pay $15 to keep the Nic Cage promise.
mbkishon Feb. 25, 2011 at 12:40 a.m.
Well, I hope the best for them. I am not seeing the movie anyways, so it is no skin off my nose.
Lydian_Selon Feb. 25, 2011 at 3:53 a.m.
Hey that's great. Still don't wanna see Wrath of the Titans.
