Sony Brings Attack the Block's Alien War to Your Neighborhood?

Kids vs. Aliens flick gets a US distributor.

Hype’s something that gets manufactured a lot these days, but the buzz Attack the Block's getting after screening at SXSW sounds due and legit enough to get me properly stoked. It looks like a cool, nasty update of the treasured “smart ass kids vs. evil creatures” genre of which we’ve gone for too long a time without since the days of Monster Squad and the Goonies. It’s about a gang of South London teens who protect their neighborhood from an extraterrestrial invasion after the aliens, oddly enough, interrupt their mugging of an upper class nurse.

Peep the trailer below and be ahead of the curve with your pals...

The flick’s got a bit of pedigree with Nick Frost and the producers of Shaun of the Dead involved and you’d think it’d be unstoppable with the ecstatic reception it got at SXSW (it won the Midnight Feature Audience Award.) However, there’s been some concern about whether the kids’ thick South London accents might hamper its appeal stateside.

Seems like that ended up being an idle fear, because Deadline says that Sony has just picked the flick up by Sony’s Screen Gems division. I’m sure there are going to be plenty of meetings coming up regarding how to market the film in the U S of A, but I imagine it’d be a quick fix to use subtitles the way District 9 did when the Afrikaans got especially inaccessible.

I saw a trailer for this whenever it was first on the site, and I wasnt feeling it. It was just a first impression so if the reviews are strong for it I would check it out but I wasnt interested in it at first.

The fact that it's directed by Joe Cornish from Adam & Joe had me sold ages ago.

It might be entertaining, but I dont think it looks like it is anything special to be honest.

@Joe: I love Adam & Joe so my interest in this film just went up 100%. As a South Londoner I can appreciate the accurate use of slang too.

Oh man, those accents are amazing. Just makes me think that they should have called it Ali G vs. The Aliens.

I know they're not really the same type of movie, but this trailer has me way more interested than the Paul one ever did.

I dunno. These accents put me off for some reason. Besides, I hate kids

Monster Squad was the shiz-nit when I was like 8. I was far more excited that Monster Squad got referenced in this article then anything this article is actually about haha

Looks like a Left 4 Dead poster.

I don't think the accents will be too much of a problem.  I mean, both Trainspotting and The Full Monty got the US relatively unchanged.

Ugh, is this how British people feel when watching American stuff? For some reason I couldn't stand those accents. Maybe I'm just tired and cranky.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
