Hype’s something that gets manufactured a lot these days, but the buzz Attack the Block's getting after screening at SXSW sounds due and legit enough to get me properly stoked. It looks like a cool, nasty update of the treasured “smart ass kids vs. evil creatures” genre of which we’ve gone for too long a time without since the days of Monster Squad and the Goonies. It’s about a gang of South London teens who protect their neighborhood from an extraterrestrial invasion after the aliens, oddly enough, interrupt their mugging of an upper class nurse.

The flick’s got a bit of pedigree with Nick Frost and the producers of Shaun of the Dead involved and you’d think it’d be unstoppable with the ecstatic reception it got at SXSW (it won the Midnight Feature Audience Award.) However, there’s been some concern about whether the kids’ thick South London accents might hamper its appeal stateside.
Seems like that ended up being an idle fear, because Deadline says that Sony has just picked the flick up by Sony’s Screen Gems division. I’m sure there are going to be plenty of meetings coming up regarding how to market the film in the U S of A, but I imagine it’d be a quick fix to use subtitles the way District 9 did when the Afrikaans got especially inaccessible.
