Take A Look At The Oscar Short Animated Film Nominess, Won't You?

We have clips, trailers, and even a full animated short. Is this the category in which Pixar will earn its Oscar this year?

Despite Pixar's de rigeur nomination for Cars 2 in the Animated Feature category for the upcoming Oscars, it probably has a better chance for a win with its entry into the Short Film (Animated) category, as Enrico Casarosa's short film La Luna (rumored to be placed before Brave) fights off four other entries for the crown. One the films is available in its entirety online, but we've embedded clips or trailers for all five of the films below. Which one tickles your fancy the most?

The National Film Board of Canada, producer of Wild Life and Dimanche, finally utilizes their youtube account and started uploading all their content which previously could be accessed on nfb.ca via a not so great player. They put up the full versions of Wild Life and Dimanche:

Cool, cool. I wonder if that La Luna short has anything to do with "The Distance of the Moon" short story by Italo Calvino... Love that story.

EDIT: Yup, it totally does. Just read an interview from the writer/director, in which he said "My biggest [influences] are The Little Prince and Miyazaki and his sense of the fantastic; there's also Italo Calvino's story, "The Distance of the Moon," about building a ladder to the moon."

Very cool. This may be the closest thing to a film adaptation of a Calvino story that we'll ever get. Looking forward to it.

Thank you, Frythefly. I hate hearing about these come awards season and then not being able to find them online.

I'd really like to see the remaining two. Did that Pixar short play before something? Is it going to?

@frythefly: Ah, shit, neither of those are available in my country, eh!

@Shaunage: Reportedly it'll be before Brave, although it must've screened somewhere in LA to be nominated for the Oscar...

Good to hear.

I totally cried at the end of The Fantastic Flying Books Of Mr. Morris Lessmore. It was great, my favourite for sure.

These are all so awesome. The two people who made Wild Life graduated from my school so I've got to root for that but the new Pixar short was also very fantastic. But then so is Flying Books. How will they decide?!?

Wicked_Wumpuson Feb. 2, 2012 at 10:56 a.m.

@Rorie: I saw the Pixar short as part of a touring animation presentation so I'm guessing if I was able to see it then the people who matter will have definitely seen it.

I saw La Luna and The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore at Siggraph last year. They are both fantastic.

Sweet! I always want to see the Oscar nominated shorts, but they haven't released them on DVD the last few years, and I never know where to find them otherwise.
