The 2011 Golden Globe Nominees Are Mostly Predictable, Occasionally Infuriating

Can you guess if Community or Parks & Recreation got nominated for best comedy series? Or if Breaking Bad made it back to best drama series?

Kelsey Grammer demands all of your Golden Globes.
Kelsey Grammer demands all of your Golden Globes.

And once again, we find ourselves with a morning in which major awards are announced. This time, it's the venerable Golden Globes, the awards hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press, a shadowy cabal that I imagine all looking exactly like Sacha Baron Cohen characters. So, basically, yes. Racist.

As always the Golden Globes have sought to capture the best and brightest in both the realms of film and television, and once again, they have gotten things mostly right, it seems.

The film categories offer few serious surprises, with The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, and War Horse all cleaning up as they have been in other awards shows. What few surprises exist are largely mitigated by the fact that the Globes specifically highlight comedy films in their own categories, making repeat nominations for movies like Bridesmaids and 50/50 not all that peculiar. The nomination for Brendan Gleeson for The Guard is a nice change of pace, though.

As for television, well...here's where things get dicier. Undoubtedly, the first thing you've noticed is that Breaking Bad is curiously absent from the Best Drama category. In its place, you perhaps see Homeland and/or Boss sitting in the space it claims right to. To be fair, both Homeland and Boss were widely acclaimed by critics in their debut seasons, and other nominees like Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire most definitely deserve their props. So, hey, maybe we ditch the American Horror Story, eh? You know, since Breaking Bad just had its best season ever? Just sayin'.

As for comedy, it should come as no surprise that both Parks & Recreation and Community continue to get the royal shaft job, even as barely-crawling toddlers like New Girl, Enlightened, and Episodes somehow found their way into the nomination list, and Glee, despite sucking with absolute resolution this year, continues to get nominated. What is it with the Hollywood Foreign Press and Ryan Murphy, anyway?

The full list of nominees is below. Get your rage faces ready.

Don't care about anything else. Give this man and his loveable and hugable face an Award.

I really think Giancarlo Esposito should have gotten a nod for Gus on Breaking Bad.

onimushroomon Dec. 15, 2011 at 9:13 a.m.

Was expecting some sort of American Horror Story hate and Alex did not disappoint. I'm not sure it should win any Best Drama awards anywhere, but it is one of my favourite shows at the moment and I'm glad it at least got nominated (I've never even heard of Boss).

EPISODES OVER COMMUNITY? WHAT?!

Napalmon Dec. 15, 2011 at 9:19 a.m.

I was hoping I would see Drive on there in some capacity. I am RAGING ALL OVER THE OFFICE TODAY.

nofx4208on Dec. 15, 2011 at 9:23 a.m.
I like Episodes, but God fucking dammit I hate that Parks and Recreation is getting no love. AND community. Wilfred. Louie- I can go on. Also, NO MUPPETS LOVE ARGHRBHRBAHGBRLAGHBHLABHAGAHABAH. And that's pretty much it. Glad that Gleeson and JGL are getting recognition, as well as everything related to Midnight in Paris!
ElectricBoogalooon Dec. 15, 2011 at 9:35 a.m.

Besides from the obvious shafting of Breaking Bad, Community and Parks & Rec, the lack of Drive is equally disappointing. At least Albert Brooks gets some recognition, and if it's any consolation Gosling is nominated for other films, but I need more Drive love! How the music is excluded is beyond me.

As long as Peter Dinklage wins I dont care about the rest

Not even a single nomination for Drive? Not watching.

TheMasterDSon Dec. 15, 2011 at 10:23 a.m.

What a shit show, no nominations for Breaking Bad, Drive or Parks?

Rowen545on Dec. 15, 2011 at 10:24 a.m.

Wasn't Nick Offerman's Ron Swanson named the best character on television? Also I was hoping some Community love would help their chances of getting renewed.

ZombieBigfooton Dec. 15, 2011 at 10:40 a.m.

Why the hell is Glee getting a nomination instead of Community?

ScanCase moderator on Dec. 15, 2011 at 10:41 a.m.

And then Drive is missing from here. Well damn.

MrMazzon Dec. 15, 2011 at 10:42 a.m.

I find the lack of community saddening. That said war the Dink.

Zaccheuson Dec. 15, 2011 at 10:51 a.m.

What's up with the Episodes love? I mean it's a good show, but I wouldn't put it anywhere in this list.

Do we really live in a world where the Best Forgein Picture may go to a movie directed by Angelina Jolie?
FoxMulderon Dec. 15, 2011 at 11:16 a.m.

Not getting all of the awards love for Ides of March....I love Gosling and Clooney, but that movie was so average in every way...

DrPockets000on Dec. 15, 2011 at 11:23 a.m.

No Drive for Best Drama? Fuckers.

Darkstalkeron Dec. 15, 2011 at 11:32 a.m.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
