The 2011 Golden Globe Nominees Are Mostly Predictable, Occasionally Infuriating

Can you guess if Community or Parks & Recreation got nominated for best comedy series? Or if Breaking Bad made it back to best drama series?

Kelsey Grammer demands all of your Golden Globes.
Kelsey Grammer demands all of your Golden Globes.

And once again, we find ourselves with a morning in which major awards are announced. This time, it's the venerable Golden Globes, the awards hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press, a shadowy cabal that I imagine all looking exactly like Sacha Baron Cohen characters. So, basically, yes. Racist.

As always the Golden Globes have sought to capture the best and brightest in both the realms of film and television, and once again, they have gotten things mostly right, it seems.

The film categories offer few serious surprises, with The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, and War Horse all cleaning up as they have been in other awards shows. What few surprises exist are largely mitigated by the fact that the Globes specifically highlight comedy films in their own categories, making repeat nominations for movies like Bridesmaids and 50/50 not all that peculiar. The nomination for Brendan Gleeson for The Guard is a nice change of pace, though.

As for television, well...here's where things get dicier. Undoubtedly, the first thing you've noticed is that Breaking Bad is curiously absent from the Best Drama category. In its place, you perhaps see Homeland and/or Boss sitting in the space it claims right to. To be fair, both Homeland and Boss were widely acclaimed by critics in their debut seasons, and other nominees like Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire most definitely deserve their props. So, hey, maybe we ditch the American Horror Story, eh? You know, since Breaking Bad just had its best season ever? Just sayin'.

As for comedy, it should come as no surprise that both Parks & Recreation and Community continue to get the royal shaft job, even as barely-crawling toddlers like New Girl, Enlightened, and Episodes somehow found their way into the nomination list, and Glee, despite sucking with absolute resolution this year, continues to get nominated. What is it with the Hollywood Foreign Press and Ryan Murphy, anyway?

New Girl got nominated over fucking Parks and Recreation? As someone who watches both shows, I'm goddamn outraged.

mbkishon Dec. 15, 2011 at 4:04 p.m.

NO FUCKING BREAKING BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RRARRRRAGGRGGRGRGRGR

Radio_Resistanceon Dec. 15, 2011 at 4:07 p.m.

Ricky Gervais is returning this year, right? He'll tear some people a new hole, at least.

Mushiron Dec. 15, 2011 at 4:11 p.m.

I'll just watch the inevitable Ricky Gervais Golden Globes 2011 Top Humiliations video on YouTube the next day. Breaking Bad not getting nominated for anything except the acting category is completely bullshit. Do these people not understand that one of the best, if not the best drama series of all time is currently running? I have a feeling Breaking Bad may end up like The Wire. Not winning major awards, but being adored by viewers several years later.

RedSox8933on Dec. 15, 2011 at 4:30 p.m.

Nominations I'm happy about: The Artist, Hugo, Brendan Gleason, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Albert Brooks, A SEPARATION!!!, TRENT REZNOR!!!, and Idris Elba.

Snubs that prove that awards shows are childish, vulgar, and completely insignificant (I use that Walbrook quote way too much): Tree of Life, Terrence Malick (George fucking Clooney over Terrence Malick? Really?), Nicolas Refn, DRIVE, Community, Parks and Rec, MOTHER FUCKING LOUIE, Breaking Bad, Aaron Paul & Giancarlo Esposito, RON FUCKING SWANSON.

I really don't know why I get so upset when EVERY FUCKING YEAR nominations for popular awards are horseshit, but something about deeply pisses me off. Remember in 1994 when Hoop Dreams and Crumb weren't nominated for the Oscar because a lot of the members voting for documentaries were actually distributors of documentaries? And then the outcry sparked by this bullshit corruption made them actually change their nomination policies? Yeah, well this year Steve James' (the director of Hoop Dreams) The Interrupters, one of the most highly acclaimed films, let alone documentaries, of the year did NOT make the Academy's short list for Best Documentary. Neither did Tabloid, Senna, or Into the Abyss.

Award shows are fucking horseshit. HORSESHIT.

Daemonon Dec. 15, 2011 at 5:23 p.m.

I guess this is why I haven't paid that much attention to award shows since '85 when the massive castle they built and burnt to the ground for the movie Ran lost out to the adobe hut in Out of Africa...just cause they wanted to pile it on. I mean, I like New Girl and I actually like the cast beyond wanting to do naughty things to Zooey, but choosing that show over Parks and Recreation and Community? It makes me wonder who is involved in those shows that's causing such an obvious snub?

moose39on Dec. 15, 2011 at 5:59 p.m.

I can't be the only one surprised that Shameless didn't get nominated for anything, yet Episodes did. Crazy.

zakkroon Dec. 15, 2011 at 7:24 p.m.

Eh, Breaking Bad isn't that great.

... is what I would say if I were insane.

I could go on and bitch about this being stupid, but I'm sure everyone else already has, so I'll just say... I nominate Breaking Bad for Screened's Best TV Show of 2011 (Possibly Ever?) Award-I-just-made-up.

forkboyon Dec. 15, 2011 at 7:54 p.m.

I'd go for Romola Garai for Best Actress in a Miniseries. Really enjoyed The Hour. Idris Elba in the Best Actor category too, really keen on Luther..

Mistress_Redheadon Dec. 15, 2011 at 8:15 p.m.

Ugh most of these truly suck.. Go Steve Buscemi though. Would love to see him get some nods.. New Girl can go suck it the show blows, Glee as well needs to die in a fire.. there are far better shows around to get nominated. Happy about Game though, great show, deserves awards if for nothing else but costume/sfx

Nice to see George is getting his props.

Not even going to bother commenting on how crap Bridesmaids was, obviously I am one of the rare few who hated it.

cmapriceon Dec. 15, 2011 at 9:17 p.m.

Episodes was spectacular. Glee, on the other hand, should be wiped from our collective memories.

I still don't understand the feeling that Parks and Recreation and Community got shafted. I admittedly only watched during their respective first seasons, but I didn't find them all that funny.

Slow year in film, though.

bunkerbuster05on Dec. 15, 2011 at 9:39 p.m.

As long as Cranston wins for best actor I'm fine with no best tv show.

TadThuggishon Dec. 15, 2011 at 10:32 p.m.

Dude. Let's just stop caring.

I also loved The Hour and Luther. Though neither of those are mini-series. Downton Abbey isn't a mini either.

golguinon Dec. 16, 2011 at 12:40 a.m.

I need to get caught up with American Horror Story. I watched up to the episode after the Halloween episodes, but then work and Skyrim happened.

That right there is your problem, ESPECIALLY for Parks and Rec. Season one was, by everyone's admission, completely awful. (Amy Poehler has gone on record saying she doesn't know how the show got to stay on the air after that season) But do yourself a favor and watch seasons 2 and 3. Trust me, I was also down on Parks and Rec after watching that first season.

GunsAreDrawnon Dec. 16, 2011 at 3:47 a.m.

Community season 2 was pretty bad so its good that they didn't nominate it. Atleast most of the comedies nominated were bad to begin with.

pdfstreeton Dec. 16, 2011 at 4:01 a.m.

No love for Super 8 or Drive? Wow, that sucks. Hopefully Gervais' performance will be worth the watch.

sanderon Dec. 16, 2011 at 4:14 a.m.

WTF I found this was Breaking Bad's weakest season. It picked up through the last few episodes though..

Dig Deeper into The Descendants

George Clooney plays a Land Baron who struggles to take on parental responsibility when his wife falls into a coma after a boating accident. His troubles are compounded when he discovers that she was having an affair. He sets out to find the man in question, daughters in tow.
