The American Defeats Mexico, Love, and Other Box Office News

Even in a slow burning character drama, people just can't stay away from George Clooney. Dude's a dreamboat!

This clip is sort of apropos of nothing really. Apart from being generally hilarious, it's just one of those things that makes me appreciate seeing Danny Trejo in a major starring role all the more. Dude's had a crazy career, full of great movies, and, well...movies that star Ken Shamrock. That movie is called Champions, by the way. No need to watch it, you've now seen all the best parts.

So I'm sure you're curious how Machete did at the box office weekend, along with the other debuts. Well, it came in third overall, with around $11.3 million to its name. Under some circumstances, that might have been a disappointing debut, but take into account two factors. One, this is a crazy ass looking action movie starring a guy who has, up to this point, largely been relegated to back-up roles as thugs, gangsters, and generally threatening presences for the bulk of his career. This is like someone giving William Forsythe a major starring role in 2010, or Mark Rolston, or Tiny Lister. Secondly, Robert Rodriguez, being the frugal man that he is, kept Machete's production budget at around $20 million, which means that it's doing just fine, all things considered.

The surprise winner this week was The American, the George Clooney assassin picture that, by all accounts, is not the movie that it's been marketed as. Apparently it's a really awesome character study and features another stellar Clooney performance, but again, you watch those ads, you're expecting a lot of foreign intrigue and tense gun violence. I've heard more than my share of people talk about that movie like it was some colossal disappointment, which makes me wonder how word of mouth will treat it next week. We shall see.

The other debut this week, the surprisingly good Justin Long / Drew Barrymore romcom, Going the Distance, managed just fifth place, taking in about $6.9 million. That's better than The Switch managed upon its opening weekend, but that's not really much consolation, I'm imagining.

Little news of note around the other holdovers, except to say that Toy Story 3 saw a bit of a resurgence this week after reopening on 900 or so screens (though not enough to get back into the top 10), and Avatar: Special Edition continues to just kind of exist, making around $2.3 million on the same 800 screens it had last week.

[ Edit: Going to be a slow news day for Screened, as we'll be taking some downtime for Labor Day and to prepare for our upcoming Big Big Live Show Live!]

Enough of my rambling, just click on for the full list.

Box Office Results: 09/03 - 09/05

1. The American

$13 million / $16.1 million / NEW
Not exactly a massive haul for a number one movie, but with how topsy-turvy the box office world has been as of late, simply coming in first ought to be considered a fine victory. That Wednesday opening sure didn't do it too many favors, though.

2. Takers

$11.5 million / $37.9 million
When the exact dollar figures came out for last weekend's haul, Takers actually won the week, by all of like $300 grand. Still, I never expected it to keep doing business past that first week. I. Just. Don't. Get it.

3. Machete

$11.3 million / NEW
As I said, not a bad start for a movie starring a 66-year-old character actor who looks like he just climbed up through a molten hole in the earth, just to disembowel you for no reason.

4. The Last Exorcism

$7.6 million / $32.5 million
A pretty significant drop-off from last week, but again, consider that the entire production budget for this movie was less than $2 million. Anything it makes at this point is just gravy. And maybe if it isn't overly successful, we won't have to endure scads and scads of Last Exorcism sequels. The Laster Exorcism. The Lastest Exorcism. The Last Exorcism: The Lastening. Whatever.

5. Going the Distance

$6.9 million / NEW
Guys, guys, guys...I'm going to let you in on a little theory I have. Now, I know this might sound crazy, but just hear me out. I've thought long and hard about this, and I think there's really only one explanation for this movie's middling performance its opening weekend: Justin Long is not the sex bomb that we all thought he was.

6. The Expendables

$6.6 million / $92.2 million
Only about a 30% drop-off from last week, further proving that over the long-haul, America loves watching white guys blow up Latinos a little bit more than it loves watching a Mexican blow up white guys. Take THAT liberal Hollywood!

7. The Other Guys

$5.4 million / $106.9 million
A mere 14% drop from last week. This movie's staying power is simply amazing, which, incidentally, is what your mom complimented me on last week. (Look, when I've had to write about the same movie on this list for more than 5 weeks, the mom jokes come out, OK? I'm lazy!)

8. Eat Pray Love

$4.9 million / $69 million
Not a huge money drop-off from last week, but it did drop four whole spots, which gives me a bit of hope that I can stop writing about this effing movie by next week. Then again, with Resident Evil: Afterlife the only major release of next week...yeah, I'm screwed.

9. Inception

$4.5 million / $277.1 million
In what has to be the smallest percentage drop I've ever seen in my months doing this, Inception dropped a mere 7% from last week. 7! That's minuscule! Barely a thing! This is 8 weeks on the top 10, by the way. Anyone wanna bet it can make it a full 10?

10. Nanny McPhee Returns

$3.6 million / $22.4 million
Nope, still don't care.

I actually just saw Toy Story 3 for the first time yesterday.  Hey, did you know that movie's pretty good?

Will be Inception make a full 10? Hell yeah it will.
Mr_skeletonon Sept. 6, 2010 at 7:17 a.m.
@ChiliPalmer: I dont think so, it will probably stop at 750.
Kovskion Sept. 6, 2010 at 7:37 a.m.
I'm amazed about what drawing power George Clooney really have, he's getting both the male and female viewers coming in despite what kind of movie it really is. Meanwhile I'm horrified to see Takers to be on second place, like really? I don't know a squat what that movie has going, there must be lots of people who is such suckers for cute boys that they will see anything. I guess i've seen worse tho.

I think I remember seeing Champions long ago, but my memory data is pretty vague.

Regarding Justin Long not being a sex bomb: I saw him shopping at Trader Joe's last weekend. He was carrying a motorcycle helmet. A motorcycle helmet! I don't know what this means other than maybe he's not the lanky nerdo he appears to be.

One of my Facebook friends quoted that movie. The only reason I know that is because another Facebook friend commented on that post and said "great movie, homie".

I unfriended both of them.

How many people do you think that went to see The American didn't know they weren't going to see a standard George Clooney action film?
