Still coming off the weekend high, I don't think that anyone will be surprised that Disney announced yesterday that they have put The Avengers sequel in to development. They would have been pretty damned stupid if they didn't but, the big question will be if they can re-make the super special recipe that made the first one so great. It also will be exciting to see if they decide to bring back Joss Whedon to write and direct and if he would be able to pull it off twice and not go all "Jon Favreau: Iron Man 2" on us.
Another big "hurdle" will be that after Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr. will have completed his 4 picture deal and they will have to re-negotiate his contract. I can't imagine that he would decide not to do it, but I can imagine that it will cost them a lot of money…a lot. Luckily, all the other main characters are already locked in by multi-picture deals which also makes me hope we could potentially be treated to a Black Widow and/or Hawkeye stand alone film. That would be fun.
Speaking of Iron Man 3, it has finally found its female lead. After much back and forth with Jessica Chastain, she finally told her fans that she won't have time to fit it in to her schedule. And today, they went with Rebecca Hall who last appeared in The Town with Ben Affleck and what an interesting choice that is. Her character will be a scientist who plays a crucial role in creating the nanotechnology known as Extremis. I adored her in both The Town and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. I'm not sure that I find her particularly funny and I hope she can keep up with the RDJ wit but I do really want to love her and hope that Iron Man 3 can capture some of The Avengers' magic and return to its glory days!

Rebecca Hall for what? Lead in what role?
When you make $200 million, I'm not surprised.

Iron Man 3.
Extremis armor in Iron Man 3: hell yeah! Can't wait to see who plays the bad dude who also has extremis.
After The Avengers I wonder how they expect to top that level of quality with sequels for Cap, Thor and Iron Man.
I'm sooo sick of hearing about The Avengers.
Shane Black with an Iron Man movie should be great. I remember Rebecca from the Prestige and Red Riding, she was great in both.
Hopefully it's as great as this one was.
@RockinKemosabe: I don't think they (or anyone) should expect Iron Man 3 to be as good or epic as Avengers. Avengers is THE crossover movie where you get to see Iron Man talk to Thor in a meaninful way.
I was surprised they didn't green lit a Avengers 2 before the NA release since it was making all that oversees money. Hopefully Iron Man 3 is more like 1 than 2. IM2 was overstuffed and to long.
Um, isn't Gwyneth Paltrow the leading lady in the Iron man series? Her and Tony Stark have been the only romantic relationship handled remotely well - the ones in Thor and Captain America were two of the worst committed to celluloid. So long as this girl isn't a love interest, it's all good.
One of The Avengers greatest strength was not shoving a romance plot where it didn't belong, unlike every Hollywood film ever. Odd, because rookie mistake, really.

What role? I know what the movie is.

We don't have an exact character name yet...all they have said is she is a "scientist who plays a crucial role in creating the nanotechnology known as Extremis."

It shouldn't be about "matching up" or comparing every new Marvel movie to The Avengers. The Avengers is great for what it is, and the standalone superhero movies should focus on being good in different ways. Because they focus on more personal stories, they have the potential to do interesting things with their characters which an ensemble movie like Avengers can't.
This notion that every sequel has to one-up the previous films by becoming more "epic" is a really restrictive and self-defeating way of thinking.
There was something wrong with Iron Man 2?? I thought it was great! Better than The Avengers even.
Not surprised at all. I say, more power to 'em! <3
I hear that Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are the next films after The Avengers, so maybe in 2014, we'll see Capt. America 2 and a Hawkeye film. Also, if Avengers 2 is definitely being made, then they need Iron Man to be in it.
Good. It's worthy of a sequel for sure

Wow. Bravo. You deserve a prize...
This is all looking pretty promising!
Now, instead of just sequels, I can't wait to hear of new IPs brought to film. (Antman, Edgar Wright, please?)
