The Screening Room: Aliens!

GET INTO OUR CHAT ROOM, YOU BITCH!

I strongly recommend you take ten minutes to go ahead and watch that video. Go ahead, I'll wait. It's not quite as good as the Predator Rap or the Robocop Rap, since it relies perhaps a bit too much on audio clips from the film, but it's still pretty great.

Now, where were we? Oh yeah, we were mostly coming out at night...mostly. What can a mere mortal say about Aliens? This is, undoubtedly, my favorite movie by James Cameron, and a ridiculously influential film, especially if you look at the history of video games that take place in space. The look and feel of games like Gears Of War or Halo undoubtedly owe a lot to the angular machinery and rough-and-tumble space marines of Aliens.

You could also write a book about the film's recurring theme of motherhood, whether it's Ripley's fevered desire to rescue Newt, or the aliens' desire to make everyone a kind of mother by turning them into human incubators for the rest of their kind, or the alien queen's stab at revenge after the destruction of her offspring. It's a film with interesting political subtexts, as well, as was the first Alien ; Cameron himself compared the Marines' over-reliance on firepower and its inability to deal with the specific threat that the aliens posed with the U.S. soldiers who were sent to Vietnam

And, of course, a lot of fucking aliens get blown to shit. Won't you please join us at 4 PM PST in our chat room (that link will go live around 3:00 PM) and watch one of the most seminal films of the 1980s?

( Note: The version of the film on Netflix Streaming is the Aliens "Collector's Edition" according to the title, but it does not have the extra footage added in the director's cut of the film. We'll sync everyone up multiple times in the film to ensure that we're all on the same page, but there will likely be incongruities here and there.)

Awesome. Will watch this one
Rorieon Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:12 a.m.
I was reading up on these films last night, and one of the articles said that the theme of the first Alien was rape, the second was motherhood, and the third was guilt. Sound about right? Any other opinions?
wreckson Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:15 a.m.
A great reason to throw in my Collector's Edition laserdisc. It's a bughunt.
ThePickleon Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:25 a.m.
I love this idea because I LOVE Aliens. Director's Cut FTW!
Flap_jacksonon Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:25 a.m.
This was #3 on my list of childhood movie scares:

"Yes, it is in fact "Game over man!," when the thing that you're fighting doesn't like to show its face a lot, preferring to do its business in the dark, in the shadows, or from above. Yes, that's right, I checked my bathroom VERY thoroughly before I took a shower, including the ceiling years after I saw this movie. James Cameron, you made a great movie, but I will never be able to watch it again."
Scrollon Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:26 a.m.
I think I could probably watch this again. I don't think my tape of it is watch able any more.

It's just a shame I won't have the blu ray of it till December.
Hjelson Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:29 a.m.
I'll be there with mostly bells on... Mostly...
Matt_on Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:35 a.m.
Hicks' quote about his shotgun: "  I like to keep this handy... for close encounters." was ripped word-for-word at the beginning of Call of Duty 4. That stands out as one of the most blatant video game take-a-ways from this movie.
dvorakon Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:40 a.m.
@Rorie: That sounds particularly accurate, but where did that come from?
Fattony12000on Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:46 a.m.
I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Darkstornon Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:55 a.m.
I guess I'm one of the few who didn't love 'Aliens.' I thought 'Alien' was far superior (the sequel was more of an 80s action movie than a horror classic like the original).

God I love this movie. I just wish they hadn't stolen so many lines from Starcraft and Call of Duty...
Rorieon Nov. 17, 2010 at 11:59 a.m.
@dvorak: I was just reading a few scholarly articles on the series that popped up when I googled "mothership and aliens".
djames216on Nov. 17, 2010 at 12:03 p.m.
I can't help but feel that it will be very fiddly for people with the Director's Cut to try to keep synced up with the "standard" shorter version of the movie.  Alternatively, if you were watching the Director's Cut you only need to ask people watching the shorter version to pause it every now and then during the extra footage.  Given how much you guys love this film (me included), I'm surprised you don't have a copy of the Director's Cut to hand.
Fattony12000on Nov. 17, 2010 at 12:04 p.m.
@Darkstorn: That was the point! I think both of the films and both of the directors did awesome jobs, and individually created a film to suit whatever mood you might be in. I love both of them, but in different way.

However...

Scott + Giger + 1979 (and getting the whole thing kicked off) =
An incredible achievement in film making history

@Rorie: whats the the theme for the fourth one then, or do we not speak of that one?
mathewfinchon Nov. 17, 2010 at 12:13 p.m.
@Rorie:  the theme of the fourth one was insanity!!
mathewfinchon Nov. 17, 2010 at 12:18 p.m.
@pat4327:  did you really just go there
Starcraft          -1998
Call of Duty    -2003
Aliens              -1986
You were probably just kidding, but here you go anyway
Aetheldodon Nov. 17, 2010 at 12:20 p.m.
Ahhh I remember many Saturdays in my youth watching this flick on TV .... Might as well pop mine when this thing begins
Rorieon Nov. 17, 2010 at 12:27 p.m.
@mathewfinch:  FRENCH insanity, no less.
