The Screening Room: Cobra

The time has come to get our Cobra discussion on!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Cobra fans of all ages, the day is upon us! Our first edition of The Screening Room is finally here, and I couldn't be more excited for it.

In case you missed our announcement last week, here's a quick reiteration. Hopefully at some point in the last week (or over the course of your life) you acquired a copy of Cobra. If you haven't watched it lately, do so! Or, you can watch alongside us today at 4PM PST, right here in this thread (we'll replace the trailer with the stream window), as Rorie and I will be live-streaming us watching Cobra. No, we are not broadcasting the movie. That would be sort of sketchy. But if you sync up your DVD watching with our commentary, it's like we're right there with you!

So just to be absolutely clear about this: WE ARE NOT BROADCASTING COBRA. Bring your own Cobra to this party!

None of this is necessary, mind you. The real thing is just that we want you to watch Cobra along with the rest of the community, and discuss every facet of this fascinating piece of social commentary on law enforcement, the degeneration of moral society, and the best methods for cutting pizza.

In order to get the discussion off and kicked, I hereby pose some suggestions for topics to discuss regarding this remarkable film:

  • What are your three favorite Cobra moments? These can be scenes, quotes, blank Sylvester Stallone stares, whatever!
  • Given that all '80s action movies are destined to eventually come true, what will you do when an anarchic society of serial killers begins to take over your town?
  • Does Cobra feature the best '80s-era montage sequence you'll ever see, or what?
  • Brigitte Nielsen: Worth saving? Or do you wish the Night Stalker had straight up shanked her?
  • Do movies like Cobra make you wish that actual police work involved more lone-wolf action heroism and reckless explosions? I know I sure do.

Just some suggestions, as I said, but by all means, let's get to chatting, and celebrate the magic that is Cobra! Can't wait!

UPDATE:

Dudes! It's over! Thank you so very much for watching alongside us. Rorie and I had a blast.

The archived vid is now up on this here page, and in case you missed it, the movie for next week shall be...

Fletch Trailer

Meet the only guy who changes his identity more often than his underwear.

That's right! Fletch! My absolute favorite Chevy Chase comedy. Gonna be a fun one!

Anyway, now that the stream is over, by all means, let us continue to discuss the pros and the cons of Cobra. There's so much to talk about!

I really can't wait to see how this goes, and I can always go for watching Cobra again.
atomicvoodooon July 28, 2010 at 12:09 p.m.
The best moment of Cobra is by far the axe clanking scene.
Pope staff on July 28, 2010 at 12:11 p.m.
I would like Alex and Rorie to break it down, as the film progresses, what makes Cobra MORE or LESS of a badass than Rambo. Maybe a running, sliding scale. You can award or deduct BADASS points as it goes on, with the final tally determining if he's more or less badass than Rambo.

Cutting pizza with scissors, mother fucker.

Best moments of Cobra:  1)  They establish the villain's evil nature by having him park in a handicap spot.

2)  The lady falls for Cobra because of the lame jokes he makes about the amount of ketchup she uses on her french fries.

3)  He lights a dude on fire after declaring said dude has "the right to remain silent!"

These are moments that establish Cobra as one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time.
oddjobon July 28, 2010 at 12:21 p.m.
I also have never seen Cobra.

How is Cobra not on instant netflix?
Mezmeroon July 28, 2010 at 12:30 p.m.
I'm confused.  So it's a live riff track?  I'm not entirely sold, and I left my Cobra DVD in my other pants.
Alex staff on July 28, 2010 at 12:32 p.m.
@Mezmero:

We think of it more like a book club for movies, that also happens to involve a live stream. We just want to get everyone together and watch a movie each week, you know?

Is there anything more evil? I mean, you can stab all the people you want, but impeding on the conveniences afforded to the handicapped? That's reprehensible!

The trailer alone proves how awesome the writing is, lol
I only seen it once when I was younger but down for watching it again.
It's also funny how he's just a tough character, yet looks remarkably baby faced.
Hadoken101on July 28, 2010 at 12:37 p.m.
I just realized that I'm going to miss this, shame, Hope it's fun for everyone.
Alex staff on July 28, 2010 at 12:40 p.m.
@Hadoken101:
Even if you miss the live stream, watch the movie when you get a chance. We'll be talking Cobra all week long, until next week's movie!
Colonel_Furyon July 28, 2010 at 12:42 p.m.
Cobra is basically one giant Regan era propaganda film.
Joeon July 28, 2010 at 12:42 p.m.
Will there be an archive of the live footage? I won't be able to catch it tonight.
Alex staff on July 28, 2010 at 12:45 p.m.
@Joe:

I do believe so, yes.

Cobra! god I love this film. The greatest moment for me is when he enters the shop to take down the crazy who is holding hostages. He makes a token effort at being stealthy before he starts chattin on the PA system and shooting beer cans with shotguns. Its awesome because he almost strolls in there, as though nothing that bad is happening, and yet the film has preceded this moment with shots of hostage CRISIS! only one man can save the day! hundreds of cops stand outside with guns pointed at the windows, things could go bad at any moment - but enter the COBRA!
Brilliant way to intro a movie and a character, why were no more ever made? He had everything going for him!

Also was this movie sponsored by Pepsi or is that just the 80's shining through?
gabeon July 28, 2010 at 12:50 p.m.
Hey guys, I'm pretty sure Cobra is on Netflix streaming if you don't actually own a disc copy, like me!

At least I remember watching it on Netflix a couple of times.

Dig Deeper into Cobra

A no-nonsense cop takes on a group of raving lunatics who are trying to bring about some kind of "new world." Can Cobra protect the only living witness to the group's crimes?

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
