The Screening Room: Superman II

KNEEL BEFORE...oh, you know the rest.

 I also surrender...my heart.
 I also surrender...my heart.
Superman II should be a disaster. It had one of the more tumultuous development histories of any big-budget Hollywood spectacle film, with Richard Donner shooting footage for it concurrently with Superman, then being removed from the project and getting replaced by Richard Lester, famous for his work directing the early films of the Beatles. Gene Hackman refused to show up for reshoots with Lester, resulting in some sincerely weird editing around the character of Lex Luthor. Lester started shooting a full two years after Donner's scenes were filmed, resulting in some odd physical disparities for some actors.

And yet...it somehow works. Hell, it does better than work: it measurably improves on the original in many ways, perhaps mostly because Terence Stamp and his gang of interstellar outlaws come down to Earth and stop being polite...and start getting real. It's a regular Kryptonian showdown between Kal-El and his dastardly counterparts, which leads to some  wonderful scenes on the streets of Metropolis.

Anyhoo, we'll have more talking-time for this movie later on today when we air it during our Screening Room today at 4 PM Pacific! We're going to be watching the version of the film that's available on Netflix Streaming, so no, this isn't the Richard Donner Cut of a couple years ago. Nothing against Richard Donner, we're just sticking to the version that is most easily accessible for the majority of people. Show up with popcorn and join our chatroom! 4 Pacific! Be there!

After missing last week's show, I will definitely be there. Kneeling before Screened, of course.

My internet cut out during last week's show so I'm crossing my fingers it won't happen again.  Kneel before Zod!

I like it when Clark bangs Lois in the space hammock.
Dallas_Raineson Dec. 1, 2010 at 1:33 p.m.
I really can't stand the shit Lester added in, all that fucking slapstick, ugh. Still a mostly great movie.

I only have the Richard Donner cut :( on bluray
DukeTogoon Dec. 1, 2010 at 1:59 p.m.
As much as I like some of the Donner parts of the film, the Donner Cut was horrible and he was too heavy-handed in cutting as much from the theatrical cut - likely out of spite - and it made that version an overall worse experience.  The fact that once again Superman feels the need to roll back time to fix his mistakes (by reversing the Earth again no less) just seems like a lazy move and treating your audience like they didn't remember how the last movie did the same fucking thing.

I recommend the international cut, also known as the TV cut, where it blends both versions and also has scenes in neither of the other cuts.  It's an odd amalgam of differing video qualities and format changes to NTSC, but if you can put up with the patchwork editing and are old enough to remember seeing it in the theater and on TV, it's the version you remember loving.

And of course I got the Richard Donner cut. That's three weeks in a row of me getting the wrong cut of a movie. Oh well. I'll find the one we're watching tonight asap. KNEEL BEFORE CATS.

Why not Airplane or Naked Gun? Although, Superman 2 is still great, I will say.
Quateron Dec. 1, 2010 at 6:27 p.m.
Sorry, the Donner cut is BY FAR the definitive version of this movie... in fact, the definitive Superman movie made thus far, despite a few weird disparities caused by the use of test footage and suchlike. Not interested in the Lester version at all.

I was really hoping for Airplane!.

Wow, I just watched it as a kid and never understood why the film felt like two beasts duct tapped together.  I can remember thinking that all the slapstick Clark scenes beyond cheesy from another brain.  I wonder what exec was stupid enough to boot Donner.

Sweet.

You know something?  You're a real pain in the neck!
Rorieon Dec. 2, 2010 at 11:17 a.m.
@jakob187:  We will definitely hit up Airplane! At some point, but alas we had already announced Superman 2 before Nielsen died.
Olivawon Dec. 2, 2010 at 12:23 p.m.
You know what surprised me? I totally forgot how the special effects in Superman 2 don't hold up as well as Superman 1's!

Like, seriously. Just watch the opening credits for Superman 1 on Netflix. They're fucking lightyears beyond the shitty credits for the second film. And all the flying stuff looked way better too!

Wonder how that happened exactly.
Olivawon Dec. 2, 2010 at 12:25 p.m.
@DukeTogo:  You know, I agree about the turning-back-the-earth thing to be a lame way to end the second one, but the hypno-kiss makes even less sense, somehow.

Really, both cuts have their flaws, but at least Donner's is more how the movie would have been, had he not been fired by some stupid jerks.

Dig Deeper into Superman II
