UPDATE: According to the NY Daily News, Emmerich has said Will Smith will not be in this sequel since he is "too expensive". Not surprising but kind of sad when he won't lower his price to be in a fan loved sequel. It's not like he needs the cash.
It's official according to Warner Bros., there will be an Independence Day 2. Both director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Delvin are returning to work on a sequel to the 1996 summer blockbuster Independence Day. Bill Pullman, who was the president in the original, is also set to return but no word yet on Jeff Goldblum or Will Smith. Warner Bros is aiming to have the film out for summer 2015 where it will go against films like Star Wars 7 and Avengers 2.
Emmerich said the delay in producing a sequel had to do with finding the right reason. He and Devlin didn't want to make a sequel for the sake of having a sequel. If this film does come out it will have been nearly 20 years since the original and makes me wonder if people will even know what this is a sequel to. I know there is a niche community who love the film, I still watch it every July 4th, but are there enough people still clamoring for more?
