German actor Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong, Valkyrie, The Cape, Dracula on NBC) has been cast as Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Joining James Spader as the titular killer robot Ultron.
Von Strucker is a long time comic book villain, known for being both a Nazi and head of Hydra (when Red Skull is dead). In modern day comics he has generally been shown as older, bald and scarred. O yea he also has a sweet robotic hand that sucks the life force out of whomever he touches.
According to Devin Feracci at BadAssDigest, Kretschmann will have a “small” role, fighting The Avengers in a James Bond styled opener. Putting Von Strucker in the MCU proper could leave him open to appear in future seasons of Agents of SHIELD possibly. Another possibility is Marvel sticking true to the characters cannon and have him be roughly 80 years old but still youthful due to some kind of Hydra experiment like the one Red Skull went through…or you know robotic life sucking hand of DOOM! If Von Strucker is going to be that old, he’d be an easy main villain for the long rumored and all but confirmed Agent Carter series starring Hayley Atwell as the titular Carter.
Using a character like Von Strucker could also explain how 3 other characters debut in Age of Ultron. Von Strucker has two children in the comics and it has been rumored that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, played by Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olson, could be working for the bad guys initially. Why not make them his children since Marvel can’t use the M-Word. Hydra could also be involved in the creation of Ultron, with writer director Joss Whedon constantly stating that you don’t “need” Hank Pym to “make” Ultron.
The Avengers: Age Of Ultron will be in theaters May 1, 2015.
