Today In Super Bowl Advertising: Cobra Commander, The Diplomat, Darth Vader, and James Bond

Advertise ALL the things during the Super Bowl!

Hey, remember when Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in G.I. Joe as a favor to his friend Channing Tatum? (I swear I am not making that up.) And he eventually became Cobra Commander for a few seconds towards the end of the movie? Well, the TV spot above, apparently intended for airing in the Super Bowl this Sunday, would seem to give us our first look at how the sequel intends to interpret his appearance this time around:

Ylll neeerver ghat emeee, Geeeye Jurrr!
Ylll neeerver ghat emeee, Geeeye Jurrr!

Jiggle will, of course, not be reprising his role, having moved on to the more rarefied air of The Dark Knight Rises; according to IMDB, the actor behind the mask will be Faran Tahir, perhaps best known as the doomed captain of the USS Kelvin at the beginning of Star Trek. (Also new to me: apparently Walter Goggins will be in this installment of the franchise.)

Also seeing their debuts recently is a promo spot for The Dictator, which has some wonky embed code attached to it, so you can just catch it over on Deadline if you're really desperate for more Baron-Cohen.

Also, Volkswagen has debuted their now-apparently-annual Star Wars tie-in commercial, featuring one of the best recreations of the Mos Eisley Cantina, as well as the aliens within it, that I've ever seen:

Must've been fun to be on that set. Plus it has a puppy!

Also while it doesn't have anything to do with the Super Bowl, MGM released the first shot of James Bond in Skyfall today (there was a shot earlier, but it was described as being from the set of Skyfall; this is apparently the first production still):

Hey, that's a bunch of stuff for you to talk about! You know where you can do that? In the comments below!

I have to say, ever since the first trailer for G.I. Joe Retaliation came out, I'm kind of excited for it. Looks leaps and bounds better than the first one.

feargalron Feb. 1, 2012 at 2:13 p.m.

@RockinKemosabe: Plus the first trailer had that sweeeeeettt dubstep seven nation army

phoenix87xon Feb. 1, 2012 at 2:15 p.m.

Needs more dubstep.

FoxMulderon Feb. 1, 2012 at 2:42 p.m.

James BEARD is more like it!! LOLOLLOL

But in all seriousness, his unshaven look makes me wonder if Bond is going rogue for a bit in this one! Hope it turns out better than Quantum of Solace!

hrn212on Feb. 1, 2012 at 2:58 p.m.

Photos like the Bond one always make me laugh. It doesn't really tell you much about the movie. Not that these pics should spoil anything, but I like it when a movie or tv show put out photos that tease you with something. This one just seems a bit pointless.

Also that commercial is cute.

Morden2261on Feb. 1, 2012 at 3 p.m.

At least he LOOKS like Cobra Commander now...

ElectricBoogalooon Feb. 1, 2012 at 3:07 p.m.

G.I. Joe is some gangsta shiet.

InsidiousTunaon Feb. 1, 2012 at 3:07 p.m.

@feargalr: And Bruce Willis tooling around in the bed of an Elco! Movie looks like dumb fun.

Zzzleepyon Feb. 1, 2012 at 3:15 p.m.

It's Walton Goggins, not Walter!

CrimsonAvengeron Feb. 1, 2012 at 3:17 p.m.

Bond has a PPK and a beard. That's more than enough to sell me on Skyfall. With the way Cobra Commander is looking, I'm legitimately excited for GI Joe as the trailer was great and the TV Spot doesn't look bad either.

Tartaruson Feb. 1, 2012 at 3:25 p.m.

That VW ad was terrible.

Mr_skeletonon Feb. 1, 2012 at 3:31 p.m.

Every time I see The Rock in a trailer I think the movie might not be so bad.

SquirrelGODon Feb. 1, 2012 at 4:18 p.m.

Yeah. The Rock is basically fucking incredible.

That Volkswagon commercial was fun and yay puppies but the Cantina part was completely inexplicable. Like...what?

Speaking of completely inexplicable, no idea what the fuck is going on with this G.I. Joe movie.
MrMazzon Feb. 1, 2012 at 5:44 p.m.

Quoting Jay Z I can dig that

Dallas_Raineson Feb. 1, 2012 at 6:10 p.m.

Daniel Craig is so manly...

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
