For me Tom Brokaw represents a very important part of my life, high school. Every evening his NBC Nightly News broadcasts marked by day coming to an end and serves as a landmark in my life. At the time I was beginning to understand what my interests were and that often times those interests didn't match those of my peers. They were preoccupied with the trappings of high school, not to say I wasn't either, but for them the world was only our school. For me Brokaw's nightly broadcasts helped me understand a larger world that I existed in.
On Tuesday Brokaw, who anchored the national nightly news here in the US from 1983 until 2004, announced he has been diagnosed with "multiple myeloma" which is a cancer of the body's plasma cells. Currently Brokaw serves as a feature reporter for NBC usually focusing on TV documentaries about history or current events. The 74 year old said he was diagnosed back in August and has already begun treatment to which he is told he is responding well to.
For most Brokaw may be another dry reporter we remember from our childhoods. For me he was the man who explained the world, story by story, and allowed me to feel more comfortable in my skin.
