For years the mark of a middle aged man who read was a small pile of Tom Clancy novels sitting next to their nightstand. A combination of real world military knowledge and cold war era drama Clancy weaved together numerous iconic characters and stories many of which would wind their way into video games and movies. Specifically the Jack Ryan series that followed a CIA analyst growing into a full on operative who continually found himself fighting battles few in the public would know about.
For me I first started my Clancy experience by seeing The Hunt For Red October. From there my dad would make me watch the Harrison Ford era of Jack Ryan films like Clear and Present Danger. Eventually I would move into the Ghost Recon series which combined real world military tactics and a fun arcade style of shooting making a squad based game fun and engrossing. Clancy set up believable stories and characters in our own world making his books almost seem like analysis than make believe. Especially now, the idea of teams of highly trained operatives dealing with world problems is no longer fiction but a reality. The idea of a dirty bomb being smuggled from former Soviet republics into the United States is a real threat to this day.
Maybe take some time today to hunt down one of his novels or check out one of the films or video games based on his work. Hunt For Red October is still on Netflix.
