Top 20 Actresses Under 30 List Demonstrates That Numbers Can Lie

Kristen Stewart climbs to the top (mostly) on the backs of Twihards while big names take a hard fall.

Lovefilm.com has just released their sixth annual Top 20 Actresses Under 30 list and the results--at least in the top spots--may represent the beginnings of a decisive sea change among Hollywood elite of the fairer gender. The list is the result of box office receipt number crunching, award nominations/wins and general critical reception rather than per-film salary or the oft-tricky to quantify matter of, you know, actual thespian skill.

Taking the top spot thanks to the continued popularity of the Twilight franchise and her recent well-received appearance in The Runaways as a young Joan Jett is, surprise surprise, Kristen Stewart, who moved from ninth to first on this list in 2009 alone. (I still think she looks half-asleep in every role she takes.) Also moving up the list is the completely deserving Carey Mulligan who shone like the light of a supernova in the Oscar-nominated An Education. With any luck she'll send the Twihards packing by next year and we can all go back to not wanting to gouge our eyes ear drums out.

But what may be the most interesting result of this list is how far the tried-and-true superstars have fallen down this ladder: Keira Knightly, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson have plummeted to 13, 14 and 15 from 2, 5 and 8, respectively. Last year, however, was fairly slow for these three and perhaps the string of projects each has in 2010 will see them claw back to the top (I'm particularly looking forward to Knightly in Never Let Me Go).

Screened readers, who's on your list of top actresses under 30?
psychpunkon June 8, 2010 at 11:16 a.m.
I thought she was pretty good in Adventureland. Never seen anything else with her, and I don't intend to, considering. And yeah Michelle Williams is pretty awesome and Anna Kendrick can definitely act.
Danyon June 8, 2010 at 11:20 a.m.
She was good in Into The Wild.
Moridinon June 8, 2010 at 11:32 a.m.
She's so immensely frustrating. Never has an actress been so gormless before her.
Dauragonon June 8, 2010 at 11:47 a.m.
Stewart is completely fine in anything thats not Twilight. Not the best actress by any stretch but not really a bad one either.

I really like Chloe Moretz.  She's got a real deliberate delivery that most kid actors don't have and I enjoy it a lot.

Kristen Stewart is helllaa fyyyyyyyne.
bcjohnnieon June 8, 2010 at 11:48 a.m.
She is just so bland... I can't think of one thing that makes her stand out.  She might seem good when she's in a well-written movie like Adventureland, and the kids think she's good because they all cream their jeans over Twilight.

Thinking about Into the Wild makes me wonder why the hell Jena Malone's career never really took off... now there's a cute young actress I can get behind...

I'm surprised that Johansson went down.  Presumedly this was before she played Black Widow in Iron Man 2.
skrutopon June 8, 2010 at 11:54 a.m.
I know I'm getting old.  I had way too many "who?" moments looking at that list.  I didn't recognize about half of the top ten.  So is that a good sign for their list?

BTW, since when did Michelle Williams start working again?

@Daniel: Sorry, dude, she's as bland as white bread and looks half-asleep/half-dead most of the time. I just watched Adventureland the other night and couldn't stand her. She didn't put any emotion into her character and it really made her one of the weakest co-stars I've seen in a while.
Daniel staff on June 8, 2010 at 11:57 a.m.
@Matt: Matt, you're making the big mistake of thinking I care about her acting. I'm being a gentleman to her by avoiding her lack of acting skills and focusing on her physical appearance.  Haha.

The half asleep look is in, dude. Get with the times.

Oh Amanda and Emily are up there!!!

And here I thought all the good men who seek truth and brains in a woman were rare!!

Yeah she made Kick-Ass.

Kristen Stewart needs to stop mouth breathing. It's the only way she seems to be able to show emotion.

Anyway, I'm amazed how many of the chicks on the list I've never heard of.
FrozenPeason June 8, 2010 at 12:06 p.m.
@skrutop:  I think I'm with you here, didn't recognise alot of names on that list.
Sbellybellon June 8, 2010 at 12:22 p.m.
Michelle Williams is amazing.

I'll come down on the side thinking Kristen Stewart isn't so bad - I enjoyed her in Adventureland and Into the Wild, as someone else said.  However, those two performances aren't enough to land her at number one for me, though I'd put her in the top 20.

Carey Mulligan would definitely be at the top end of my list due to her stunning performance in An Education and understated but solid role in Brothers.  Emily Blunt would also be high on my list for Dan in Real Life and Sunshine Cleaning.  Anna Kendrick was also exemplary in Up in the Air, which would probably round out the top of my list.

Beyond that, a couple of others on there are solid, but haven't done much lately (Ellen Page,
Saoirse Ronan, Kiera Knightley), so I'm not really sure I could even crank out a relevant list of 20.

Holy shit! A Never Let Me Go movie? I had no idea. Easily one of my favorite books of the last decade. Dunno how well it'll translate to film, but fans of Gattica and other subtle Sci-Fi will enjoy.

@Matt: I feel that a woman of her stature needs to be more athletic and defined. If she can show off some Anna Paquin-like abs or something then I'd call her "attractive." Then if somebody can stab an adrenaline-filled syringe into her heart to animate her, then we're in business.

(Note to the women of Screened: no, I'm not entirely a shallow douchebag, but when your job is to be filmed talking for millions of dollars I expect something more. I sit at a desk all day and think I have better legs than she--once you sift through the matte of hair, of course.)

Do I need to retract my comment about you being one of the few that look for a women's brains over her looks? ;)

The only thing I as a woman who enjoys looking at other women enjoy, is her eyes. She has these big doe eyes that are attractive, outside of that its mouth breathing and munty face
