Taking the top spot thanks to the continued popularity of the Twilight franchise and her recent well-received appearance in The Runaways as a young Joan Jett is, surprise surprise, Kristen Stewart, who moved from ninth to first on this list in 2009 alone. (I still think she looks half-asleep in every role she takes.) Also moving up the list is the completely deserving Carey Mulligan who shone like the light of a supernova in the Oscar-nominated An Education. With any luck she'll send the Twihards packing by next year and we can all go back to not wanting to gouge our eyes ear drums out.
But what may be the most interesting result of this list is how far the tried-and-true superstars have fallen down this ladder: Keira Knightly, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson have plummeted to 13, 14 and 15 from 2, 5 and 8, respectively. Last year, however, was fairly slow for these three and perhaps the string of projects each has in 2010 will see them claw back to the top (I'm particularly looking forward to Knightly in Never Let Me Go).
Screened readers, who's on your list of top actresses under 30?

I really like Chloe Moretz. She's got a real deliberate delivery that most kid actors don't have and I enjoy it a lot.
Thinking about Into the Wild makes me wonder why the hell Jena Malone's career never really took off... now there's a cute young actress I can get behind...
BTW, since when did Michelle Williams start working again?
The half asleep look is in, dude. Get with the times.
YOU GO GIRLS AND KEEP FIGHTING THE ALTERNATIVE FIGHT!!!

And here I thought all the good men who seek truth and brains in a woman were rare!!
Yeah she made Kick-Ass.
Anyway, I'm amazed how many of the chicks on the list I've never heard of.
Carey Mulligan would definitely be at the top end of my list due to her stunning performance in An Education and understated but solid role in Brothers. Emily Blunt would also be high on my list for Dan in Real Life and Sunshine Cleaning. Anna Kendrick was also exemplary in Up in the Air, which would probably round out the top of my list.
Beyond that, a couple of others on there are solid, but haven't done much lately (Ellen Page,
Saoirse Ronan, Kiera Knightley), so I'm not really sure I could even crank out a relevant list of 20.
(Note to the women of Screened: no, I'm not entirely a shallow douchebag, but when your job is to be filmed talking for millions of dollars I expect something more. I sit at a desk all day and think I have better legs than she--once you sift through the matte of hair, of course.)
Do I need to retract my comment about you being one of the few that look for a women's brains over her looks? ;)
The only thing I as a woman who enjoys looking at other women enjoy, is her eyes. She has these big doe eyes that are attractive, outside of that its mouth breathing and munty face
