Love him or hate him, Tom Cruise is a movie star who to this day has the charisma for which most actors would kill. However, does that mean that he can play any and all roles? I would venture to say no. Being cast against the character's type didn't work well for Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code, but we will see if it can work for Cruise here.
There has been much controversy over the casting of Tom Cruise in the titular role of Jack Reacher, which is a film based on the book One Shot written by Lee Child. Fans of the book don't feel like he encapsulates any of the characteristics of the character - especially the physical ones. I have not read the novel, so cannot speak to that, but as Cruise usually plays the go-to good guy, I will be curious to see if he can play the anti-hero. The trailer doesn't show too much of him other than a few ass kickings, which I am sure they used hoping to convince people he can pull this off (which makes it look like maybe he can from this trailer?). Then again, I don't know that show nearly enough in this one to be able to tell yet.
Thoughts?

I haven't read the books either but I generally enjoy his movies so I'm sure I'll see it someday.
Christopher McQuarrie's last film? Way of the Gun. Promising, yes.
The 90's called they want their trailer back.
Thought the name sounded familiar. I've only read one book of the Jack Reacher series and I believe it was a prequel. From what I remember, Reacher was a pretty straight-lace MP with a bit of an attitude, but still of military training. Obviously something must've happened to make him into this anti-hero cop they're building in the trailer. But screw what the fans want. They're lucky to get Cruise, because aside from height discrepancies, Reacher's description is as generic as it gets in an action thriller.
Looks pretty good to me. Nice use of 'Young Men Dead' by The Black Angels, also used in the No Country for Old Men trailers
This looks like it'll be interesting.
I've read a lot of the novels, though a few years ago now. I'm sure that Tom Cruise can pull it off despite not being 6 feet tall
Looks cool. I've never been one to let who someone is off the screen sour my enjoyment of their entertainment, like in movies or music. Especially when most of it is overblown bullshit. I don't care one way or another about Tom Cruise, but it's always ridiculous to me how media and the like feel the need to make everything into such a big deal. I'm already tired of hearing about his divorce on the news, they treat every new Hollywood divorce like it's the first one in the history of mankind. The dude is weird, that's for sure, and I'm not signing up for Scientology any time soon but why should I care what crazy stuff he believes in? He's had some great roles. Collateral is my favorite of his.
Cruise did a great job in Collateral with an understated but borderline crazy character. So I think he has that place inside him he can reach into to play these partially sadistic roles.

This. He did very well playing an utterly ruthless, but strangely logical and reasonable psycho.
The casting decision is controversial because while Tom Cruise is a fantastic actor that can pull off most anything, the issue here is that Jack Reacher does not look like Tom Cruise. In the books he is someone that you would look at and immediately assume you should not fuck with. He is 6'6 and 225-250lbs (depending on which book). This means that an ordinary citizen wouldn't even think about fucking with him, but stupid criminals and thugs think they can push anyone around. They portray this well in the trailer when he takes out three out of five guys no problem and then gives the last two a chance to back off. So I think the spirit of the character will be there, but it may not be similar enough to the literary character to satisfy some people.
@Yodasdarkside:
I agree with both of you
Looks good to me.
@Daftasabat:
As do I, in my opinion he played a borderline anti-hero/antagonist in that move(if that is even possible). I was actually a little sad to see him go, I really liked that character(more so than his normal roles), so I personally think he can pull it off with flying colors.

Indeed
I've not read any of the novels, but this trailer looks pretty good. I really like Tom Cruise, and the ending of the trailer looked pretty good.
