TV / DVD Releases!

Tuesday time!

A boatload of new stuff this week as we get ready for Thanksgiving and the Christmas season. Let's take a look at what's going to wind up in your stocking this year, shall we?

DVD 11/17

1. Avatar

And now, we finally get the extra features we want for Avatar, like the "Family Audo Track" with all objectionable language removed. Doesn't look like there's commentary, though, which is the only reason I'd want to rent this, alas.

2. A Christmas Carol

One of those epic year-long waits for a DVD, but I guess it makes sense when the movie has Christmas right in the name. I'm sure Disney was hoping it would do more than $137 million on a $200 million budget, but I'm sure it'll do alright on DVD.

3. The Last Airbender

:(

4. Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

How does someone spend $85 million on a Cats & Dogs 2? I likes kitties AND puppies, and even I know that's a bad idea.

5. Lottery Ticket

I have no ability to write anything witty about this movie. It's apparently not very good.

6. The Kids Are All Right

Hey, how the kids doing? They're all right, thanks for asking.

7. Best Worst Movie

This is already on Netflix Streaming, so probably no need to run out and catch the DVD, but maybe you want to PISS ON HOSPITALITY?

8. The Extra Man

I actively disliked this movie. I don't really have anything good to say about it, but then, I guess you know that.

9. BearCity

"BearCity is a witty and sexy story of a group of big, hairy men living, loving, and learning in the Big Apple. Take the girls from Sex and the City, inject them with large amounts of testosterone, tape fur coats to their bodies and you have something almost as great as BearCity." I...I want to see this.

10. Metropolis

The Complete Metropolis, including the newly-discovered footage that was thought to be permanently lost. Yay!

11. Modern Times

Criterion Collection version of Chaplin's masterpiece!

12. The Night of the Hunter

Criterion Collection, again. I guess we have this movie to thank for 55 years of knuckle tattoos.

13. Heroes

The Complete Series! Also out is The Office: Digital Shorts Collection, Glee: Season 1 Giftset, Gangland: Complete Season Six, Perry Mason: Season Five, Volume 2 (Why on Earth do these people split seasons up into two releases?), and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: Sunny Christmas.

My question is why would anyone want to own the entire series of Heroes?  Anyone have an answer for it?
gelatinabominationon Nov. 16, 2010 at 9:07 a.m.
Is Bear City at all related to the bizarre SNL sketches of the same name?
obolon84on Nov. 16, 2010 at 9:15 a.m.
@HT101: I actually liked the first two seasons, but watching season 3 was a chore. This was one of the few shows that I completely gave up on. From what I've heard, the last season ties some storyline threads up relatively well, so the box-set might appeal to the fans that somehow stuck it out.

Need to get The Kids Are 'Aight and Best Worst Movie.

Weird. I wonder why the DVD version of the complete Metropolis is coming out a week before the BluRay version?
Cypheron Nov. 16, 2010 at 9:31 a.m.
I still can't imagine why they didn't release the 3D version of Avatar.

Edit: er, rather, aside from that Panasonic exclusivity deal.

yo I totally have to pick up the last airbender... best movie ALL TIME!

Companies release seasons in parts primarily to avoid the sticker shock of what a full season would cost in one purchase.  If you realized that buying a full season of Perry Mason was $60, you'd probably ask yourself what you were doing buying Perry Mason on DVD at all, while at $30 for a half season it's an impulse buy.

Marketing!

@obolon84:
I gave up sometime during season 3 as well.  However, if I do buy any season of Heroes, it will only be of Season 1 since that was the show at it's best.

Its terrifying that Cats and Dogs did more business than Scott Pilgrim.
Hawkeyeon Nov. 16, 2010 at 10:19 a.m.
@Spiral_Stars:  LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LA LA LA LA!!!

The Last Airbender has the best description ever.

If you ever want to see some deceptive quote cherry-picking look no further than the commercials for The Last Airbender. Apparently its "action packed" and "thrilling". I have a feeling those full quotes read "nowhere near action packed" and "couldn't be any less thrilling".

Seriously, I'm thinking about picking that movie up (obviously not for more than $10 new on Blu-Ray). IT has a Happening type vibe, a movie that's so inept that it's hilarious. The movie really grew on me the more I thought about it in the most ironically entertaining way possible.

I felt more : | about Avatar than :(

They already made a DVD of Metropolis with that new footage? Awesome!
cornBREDXon Nov. 16, 2010 at 1:05 p.m.

Maybe its different per state but best worst movie isn't on netflix instant streaming yet for me.
skrutopon Nov. 16, 2010 at 1:47 p.m.
A Christmas Carol is going to be all over TV in a few years.  It'll be like the Polar Express (only not as good).  Speaking of which, I haven't seen Scrooged in, like, forever.

I have Heroes Season 1 on my Netflix queue.  That's basically the same thing as having the entire series on DVD.  Except better.
Aetheldodon Nov. 16, 2010 at 2:05 p.m.
Metropolis? Complete ?!!!!!! *gleefully skips with joy*
Danyon Nov. 16, 2010 at 2:21 p.m.
Just buy the first season of Heroes and you will be fine.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
