Twilight is Best Movie at People's Choice Awards, Rorie's Suicide Imminent

Also, Grown Ups wins best comedy, Nightmare remake gets best horror film, and I am frantically looking for a bottle of ANYTHING to drown my sorrows away with.

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN, AND YOU WILL BE TERRIFIED
THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN, AND YOU WILL BE TERRIFIED
If there's one thing we've learned about the awards show market over the years, it's this: Any award featuring the words People's, Kid's, MTV, or Spike Video Game Awards is probably going to be a complete shit show. Last night was the People's Choice Awards, so you can imagine where we're going from here.

The crowning award for this evening of pop culture voted excellence--the Palm de Whore, if you will--was the best movie category, which featured such excellent nominees as Toy Story 3 (yay!), Inception (totally!), Iron Man 2 (uh, sure!), Alice in Wonderland (wait, what?) and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Twi-baaaaarrrrrrf). The winner? Well, just look at that banner image, and you know the answer.

Deep down, this should come as a surprise to no one. Twilight has been cleaning up at these sorts of populist people-voting award shows for years now, so this was kind of a foregone conclusion. Less of a foregone conclusion, however, were some of the other award categories that caused me to shit myself out of rage and confusion. For instance, the Nightmare on Elm Street remake won best horror film (over better stuff like The Crazies and The Last Exorcism), Shit My Dad Says won best new TV comedy (over similarly terrible options) and Grown Ups won best movie comedy, because ffffffffffffffffffffff.

There are really only two possibilities to take away from all of this. Either society has lost its way with such spectacular abandon that no amount of good taste and intelligence could possibly right this ship, short of using a nuke or two, or the tastes of us critical types have fallen so far out of touch with the pulse of the mainstream audience that our five dollar words about ten dollar cinematheque will simply be lost whispers amid the screeching din of poop jokes and brooding vampiric assholes in Hot Topic gear. Since my easily-wounded and highly inflated critic's ego refuses to let me accept the very notion of the latter, I'll stick with the former and blame all of you. It's just so much easier that way.

Read on for the full list of movie-and-TV-and-web-video-related nominees and winners (we're not a music site, so skipping those), most of which aren't quite as rage-inducing as the ones mentioned above.

Wow knowing people liked Twilight over inception AND the social network makes me feel dumb
oraknaboon Jan. 6, 2011 at 12:21 p.m.
The book also tops the "Greatest Books" list at Goodreads. Shows you the power of dumb democracy.
MikkaQon Jan. 6, 2011 at 12:25 p.m.
I think this just goes to show that the only people voting on this shit is teenage girls. I think it's not a very accurate image of youth culture, just an image of the more proactively annoying youths.
Toxin066on Jan. 6, 2011 at 12:27 p.m.
This whole list is a fucking atrocity. Except for the best scifi show given to Fringe.

I don't know what's scarier, the tattoo or the reflection of the lady in the mirror.

And I was having such a good day. Who are these people?
Masonvrockson Jan. 6, 2011 at 12:30 p.m.
The VGAs are actually far more brain numbing then this considering those are supposedly voted on by industry people not your average CBS viewer tard. At least double rainbow didn win. Fuck that shit >.>
psychpunkon Jan. 6, 2011 at 12:32 p.m.
I don't even have the energy left to be angry anymore.
Hot_Karlon Jan. 6, 2011 at 12:38 p.m.
Eh, not surprised.

Though for the record, as both an unabashed (though somewhat ironic) fan of the Twilight series, as well as a guy who doesn't like sitting through terrible & boring movies, Eclipse was BY FAR the best in the film series, by a landslide. It's actually entertaining without much of the horrendous, dire dialogue and acting that's found in the first two films.
Rorieon Jan. 6, 2011 at 12:42 p.m.
@skidd:  No! A lot of those categories seem pretty arbitrary.

I love how well Alex conveys his rage in this story. Not to many movie sites feature quality lines like "fffffffffffffffff." This is why I love Whiskey Media sites.

@mstrkrft: Also, having it on mute helps too.
Dallas_Raineson Jan. 6, 2011 at 12:58 p.m.
WTF, The Other Guys didn't even get nominated for best comedy.
StrikeALighton Jan. 6, 2011 at 1:01 p.m.
There's simple no point in competing with such idiocracy. The general populace's regard to popular culture just makes me feel more smug than I actually am.

I feel good about being out of touch, to be honest!

I'm with you. People these days, man...  -_-

On one hand, I want to just shrug this off as "eh, people are stupid" but then I saw that Grown Ups won Best Comedy and suddenly, I was filled with uncontrollable rage. What the fuck is wrong with people?

Gotta love pre-tweens.

Heh, "Palm de Whore."

Weird to see House...cleaning house. Also, there's a Favorite TV Chef category? Why?
SpiritGoaton Jan. 6, 2011 at 1:21 p.m.
House wining a lot and NPH is the only thing saving this travesty of a awards show, did laugh when It looked like Jennifer Aniston got a text and was like wait guys Grown Ups won best comedy
