Twins Become Triplets: Oh Noes

A thin premise gets even thinner by adding Eddie Murphy.

I must admit I loved the movie Twins. It could have been the fact that it was one of my very first movie theater going experiences, it could have been Kelly Preston in all of her teased hair glory, or it also might have been those badass matching white suits that got me. So you can imagine that with the recent announcement of a sequel called Triplets, my heart skipped a little beat, that is, until I read past the headline.

The new brother they've added to this dynamic duo? Eddie Murphy. Hmm. Not to take away from the fact that Danny Devito has used his work on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia to expand on his old school Taxi TV cred, but his decision to be paired up with a failed governor and "that guy who starred in A Thousand Words" makes me skeptical for the success of this venture.

The film is in very early stages of production, and we can only hope it might just slink away and die in development hell, but I think we should all start preparing ourselves for yet another, "please leave this movie alone, we don’t need a sequel, but know you are going to to do it anyways" film.

I expected better from you, Frank.

Whether you loved the original or not, I think this is different from a lot of franchises in that the original is clearly not sacred art that must not be tarnished. Like someone would say, "I'm so pissed about the fucking Battleship movie, now that game is totally RUINED!".

I expect this flick to get made, do moderately well, and be instantly forgotten.

I miss Rorie. All these new articles written in the same light as Rorie's posts are kinda leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

Napalmon April 4, 2012 at 6:43 p.m.

A failed governor? That sounds a little harsh, Stace! Regardless, Twins. I mean, who was clamoring for that sequel?

snake_runneron April 4, 2012 at 6:44 p.m.

"Want your movie to make money, but don't care about your integrity? Just add Murphy!"

theodacourton April 4, 2012 at 6:44 p.m.

After going with the physical difference of height, of course the next one would have a black brother. I fully expect Quadruplets to feature Jill from Jack & Jill.

Also, "that guy who starred in A Thousand Words makes me skeptical for the success of this venture. probably should have another " in there somewhere...

I don't really know why there's hate directed at Eddie Murphy. I mean, the original concept was stupid - Eddie Murphy's involvement here is just as stupid. It's sort of perfect casting in that sense. Had this Triplets movie been announced, and released, shortly after Twins in the early 90's, it would've been accepted just fine.

Let's hate on this thing for a good reason; like, for instance, why the fuck would anyone make a sequel to a movie this old? No way in hell anyone in Hollywood now can write something that feels like a movie from back then; it's not going to be good. Why even attempt it?

I'm thinking make it just Murphy. He goes in whiteface as Arnie and DeVito, then plays himself, and brings in Norbit to round it out. Then for Twin3, he could be a robot brother like in Meet Dave! And then in T4ins...

Ugh, I think I'm gonna throw up now...

@gangly: who would have ever thought that we would have to worry about games being ruined?! I miss the days when the majority of movies were original concepts.

staceywi staff on April 4, 2012 at 7:08 p.m.

@Napalm: you're right, probably a bit harsh...I could rephrase it as "not the most popular or successful governor ever."

@VodunValkyrie: D'oh. The missing in action " has been found and re-placed. He had gone out for some ice cream.

When I first read about this I thought I was reading The Onion, then I realize it was true. I'm not sure who thought this is a good idea. I mean, are they looking at the numbers from The Lorax and thinking to themselves "DeVito is HUGE again, quick, let's put him in something"? I just don't know.

Dammit, I first read an article about this on April 1st and just assumed it was an april fool's joke

Spiritofon April 4, 2012 at 9:25 p.m.

And you all thought "Jack and Jill" was the bottom of the Hollywood barrel...

LiquidSwordson April 4, 2012 at 9:33 p.m.

What other sequels no one asked for are we going to see in the future!

twelve1784on April 4, 2012 at 9:38 p.m.

@Spiritof:

At least in this movie the twins aren't all going to be played by Adam Sandler

staceywi staff on April 4, 2012 at 9:43 p.m.

@twelve1784: Ahhh, now that you put it in to the world that will probably happen! Kind of like how South Park actually predicted "Jack and Jill" years ago. Scary.

LaserLamberton April 4, 2012 at 11:09 p.m.

what the fuck? a failed Governor? you mean star of Terminator, Predator, Conan the Barbarian Total Recall and everything else awesome? who is your audience here? Hardcore Devito fans? is the Devitocon this summer or next? How 'bout "Star of Lorax"? TV cred? can I make another sentence end with a question mark?

Dude fuck this site, I want Rorie and Alex back.

also while we're on the subject Eddie Murphy the guy who starred in a Thousand Words? what about Beverly Hills cop? GAH!
