Vin Diesel Needs Work, Pimps New Riddick Movie On Youtube

Because we all cared so much about Chronicles of Riddick.

Hey, fans of Riddick - you do exist, don't you? Well, David Twohy says you do, and apparently someone with money believes him, as a new Riddick movie is apparently on the way next year. Very little has been said about it thus far, but ComingSoon.net points us over to this Youtube post that is apparently a record of something that Vin Diesel livestreamed yesterday. It appears to be some kind of buyer's reel that they've put together for companies that might be interested in distributing Riddick 2011 (the only name the film is given).

It's always cool to see a movie star do something nice for his fans, so I appreciate the gesture, but man, Diesel appears to be as high as a kite in his intro to this little vlog. There's no actual footage of the new film in the video (they start talking about it around the 5:30 mark); just Twohy talking about the various fauna of the new alien world that Riddick is going to find himself trapped on. No mention of plot, except for the fact that Riddick is being hunted by mercenaries in the film, and that they're going to be aiming for an R-rating. That would probably be in reaction to the box office disappointment that the toned-down, PG-13 Chronicles of Riddick wound up being, barely grossing its budget back thanks to international markets. I like the thought processes here, to be honest: make a cheaper, R-rated film that compares to Pitch Black instead of its bloated sequel. Still, we'll have to wait for next year to see what Diesel and Twohy have up their sleeve. In the meantime, take a trip to Diesel's basement to catch the footage:

I have a lot of love for the Riddick universe, especially Escape from Butcher Bay, and would be really excited for another movie.

The only thing worse than a sequel going PG-13 in order to appeal to a bigger audience, is when the second sequel reverts back to an R rating after the previous film sucked.

Perfect example of this is in the Alien series. They made the terrible Alien vs Predator (PG-13) followed by the horrendous Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (R).

You made your bed, now lie in it. Don't try to win back the original audience with some shitty olive branch in the form of a preferred rating. Ugh.

Vin Diesel is a fucking legend!

I really like the whole Riddick movie, game universe. I wish it had a half-decent comic, too. I'm definitely looking forward to another Riddick movie if there is any chance of it.

I really like the Riddick movies. They're definitely a guilty pleasure (but the game's are just solid all around).

Vin Diesel seems like a really cool guy, and I hope that this new movie performs a lot better than Chronicles did.

I went into the cinema to see Pitch Black knowing nothing about the film or Vin Disel and I really enjoyed it, would love to see more like it. Chronicles... it was ok, but glad to hear they're not going to continue that storyline.

@Alexander:  See what I mean? Dude was up in the air.

I really dig the Riddick films, hell even the game was awesome. I felt like I was the only one who enjoyed the second flick and was disappointed when it did so poorly since I assumed that'd be the end of saga but I'm glad  Diesel and Twohy haven't given up the ghost yet.

Hopefully they learned from their mistakes with the somewhat bloated sequel.

That video is almost... adorable.

@Zaph: I don't necessarily agree with you.  Alien vs. Predator was not a good movie but it had some direction whereas Requiem was an absolute mess.  Pitch Black was a solid film, Riddick was a hard ass but in Chronicles his was gimped by the PG-13 rating because they were trying to build a franchise.  If, with this third film they can get back to Riddick being a bad ass and having a solid film behind that then the decision to go back to R will have been validated.

When I first read this title I thought it meant Vin Diesel made a Riddick movie himself and put it on youtube.

I guess I'm a fan of Riddick

I liked the games and the movies, and I like Vin Diesel

I just kind of wish that Riddick had stayed a failed series. Twohy doesn't appear to have learned his lesson from Chronicles, which is the second most bloated film I have ever seen (just behind Southland Tales). It was the first film that I remember to have had naked aspirations toward becoming an Unstoppable Blockbuster Machine only to die at the starting line (see also: Sahara, The Golden Compass). Don't plan three movies ahead, guys. You'll just jynx yourselves.

Also, @Rorie, why didn't you come to Boston? The SEGA guys were nice and it was great to meet childhood idols, don't get me wrong, but nobody there was really knowledgeable enough about the forums for me to start up a bitch session.

I too, would like another Riddick movie.

@belonpopo:  Don't worry, you aren't missing much. But sorry!

Chronicles of Riddick didn't fail because of a PG-13 rating.  That being said, I really like the universe that they created with that franchise and am interested to see if they can find an interesting story to tell from it.

Dig Deeper into Pitch Black

A crew is shipwrecked on an alien planet infested with deadly nocturnal creatures. The planet's suns are going down and the crews only hope of survival is mysterious convict Richard B. Riddick and his unique eyes, capable of seeing in the dark.
