Voltron Reboot Imminent

Voltron's being rebooted on Nicktoons rather than the big screen.

In what may be bum out news for nostalgia hunting children of the 80's, Variety is reporting that Voltron's reboot is coming soon, but it's not getting the bigscreen Transformers treatment.

Timed in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the original show and toy line, Voltron Force will premiere on Nicktoons next year with a run of 26 half-hour episodes. A new Mattel toy line will be released for the anniversary as well.

Considering the original series was produced by Mattel with the express purpose of selling its toys, it sounds like they're testing that tried and true 80's formula in the, shit what is this, the teens? The 2010's? It will be interesting to see how it pans out. There are so many more programming options for kids these days than there were in the 80s, it could get left in the dust.

The article mentions the Power Rangers will be getting a reboot on Nickelodeon as well, and last week Rorie reported that Thundercats will be coming to Cartoon Network. Nostalgia overload!

What say you? Do you think a film release would have been better?

I'd prefer a Voltron movie to a Voltron cartoon reboot. With the movie, that's just one bad pill to swallow. With a whole cartoon series, that's multiple kicks to the groin. I guess my point is, they'd both be horrible, but a movie would be the lesser of two evils.

Meh. I don't care about Voltron, I never have. But if this new Power Rangers reboot will be a retelling of the original series then I might be interested.

Everything old is new again!

But man, I could not care any less for Voltron.

I remember watching Voltron, and I had the toys,  The dicast ones, and all the plastic ones too, but the cartoon I remember sucking.  Just to weird for a 5 year old.  I do remember the guy in then blue lion dying tho, and the princess taking over.  A think a movie could be done well, and make a ton of dough.

If RZA directed it, I'd be down.

Mattel had nothing to do with the original production, nor the toys.  So I'm not sure where you got that idea from.

Good catch, Duke, thanks for the heads up! I suppose I misread this bit in my early morning news-ing:

The move to TV makes sense: "Transformers," "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" and "G.I. Joe" were introduced to kids via shows produced by Hasbro and Mattel to sell toys. "It's an exciting way to introduce the brand to a generation that isn't familiar with 'Voltron,'" Koplar said.

@Pope:  Ironically, Mattel DID distribute the Panosh Place made toys overseas it seems, so it was partly right.

Oh man, if they made a reboot of the ORIGINAL Mighty Morphin Power Rangers I think I'd watch that. :/

I wonder if Sven will die in the new series like in the original cut, or whether he'll just be 'badly hurt but you never see him again' like in the edit. Who am I kidding, he probably won't even be in it at all.

Could not care less about a Voltron re-make, mostly because when I was young a family friend bought me a Chinese knock-off Voltron toy that was so cheap and disappointing it put me off the show forever. So do your worst, Hollywood, because I have no positive memories of that children's show for you to prey on! It's all blackness in my heart! BLACK!

There is no emoticon in creation to capture the disdain on my face.
