Wachowskis' Cloud Atlas to "Stretch Our Brains Farther than the Matrix"

This ISN'T that gay romance in Iraq.

People forget that Halle was already an extra in the Merovingian's Hel club in Matrix #3.
People forget that Halle was already an extra in the Merovingian's Hel club in Matrix #3.

As Pope mentioned in his casting round-up, the Wachowski Siblings (writing that’s going to take getting used to) are putting together a new, big-budget sci-fi project and it actually isn’t that button-pushing “gay love affair in Iraq” story, Cobalt Neural 9. Instead, it’s an adaptation of a novel, Cloud Atlas, a genre-bending story that sounds quite heady. Its themes are spelled out clearly as… “the ease with which one group enslaves another, and the constant rewriting of the past by those who control the present..."

...so that section of the book report's already been done for you.

Joblo found that Halle Berry’s going to star in this because she (I'll go for it) let the cat out of the bag during a Q&A at the NAACP Image Awards. She said she’d be shooting this next year with Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman, and that it'd "stretch our brains even further than the Matrix" - -  which is a bold guarantee, indeed.

I’m a mark for the entire Matrix saga, unabashedly (yes, even Revolutions and the games) as well as Speed Racer (which Rorie so valiantly defended.) I'll confess to seriously questioning where the Wachowskis' heads were at when word got around about Cobalt Neural 9, but this sounds a lot more to my speed. Their work is polarizing, to be sure, but I can think of few other filmmakers today who can make as strange, daring and new material with such high budget power behind them.

So bring Cloud Atlas on!

in other words people won't understand it

I am fine with Matrix 1 and 2 but Revolutions cannot be defended.  AT ALL.  The kid who saves the day is the worst thing ever.

Sounds interesting, can't wait.

Woah, is this that book that has a story that ends mid-sentence, then shifts to another story, then another and another before folding back outward to give the last halfs of each part? Because that could be interesting.

I think I have a book to read.

Inception is to now what The Matrix was back then.

sounds intriguing enough for me. the ease of which one group enslaves another is quite interesting.

besides, the wachowski's can do no wrong in my book. Speed Racer was such a great, underrated movie. Immensely creative. I don't care what they call themselves,

Can't wait to see whatever they're working on next.

and holy shit, just the thought of them working with Tom Hanks is enough to evoke fanboy boners.

I also quite enjoyed ALL THREE Matrix movies. Yes, the ending was pretty dopey, but I still enjoyed the ride. I also enjoyed V and Speed Racer, so I'm always interested to see what the Wachowski Whatevers will make next. Halle Berry? Not so much.

What do you mean "  the Wachowski Siblings (writing that’s going to take getting used to)"?

Time to hit up the rest of the internets for an answer...

*EDIT*  OOOOOOHHHH!!!  WOW!!!  That...is a surprise for anyone who doesn't follow the Wachowskis like myself.  Umm...well, cool beans for Lana!

Cloud Atlas is an incredible book. Everyone should read it, as you should for everything else David Mitchell has written.

I don't think this will be a good movie. Pretty damn fucking sure, actually.
