Weekend Box Office: September 13th, 2010!

No one's making any money. :(

Hey dudes, and welcome to another edition of El Weekend Boxo Offico. I'm not going to lie; this is kind of a boring time of the year for box office. Kids are going back to school, football's ramping up and taking people away from the theaters, studios are biding their time and saving their money for their award campaigns, etc. Things should be a little bit more interesting this coming weekend, with no fewer than four wide releases popping up.

Weekend Box Office

1. Resident Evil: Afterlife

$27.7 million / $27.7 million

A wonderful 13% Rotten Tomatoes ranking and a 4.3/10 user score here on Screened leads to $27.7 million for Afterlife. Not a huge surprise, considering the fact that no one else bothered to release a movie wide this weekend.

2. Takers

$6.1 million / $48.1 million

Takers somehow manages to go from first place to third place to second place in three weeks. For the love of god, people, you're going to encourage T.I. to make more movies. That'd probably be more entertaining if he was actually a calculator.

3. The American

$5.9 million / $26.7 million

Surprised as hell that this didn't drop more than it did, given the poisonous word of mouth that audiences must be sending around. As it is, a drop of 55% is still good for third place, and given the budget ($20 million), it'll probably be profitable in the end.

4. Machete

$4.2 million / $20.8 million

The "winner" of this weekend's biggest drop at 63%. You have to wonder if the political stance of this film is hurting its reception in certain parts of the country.

5. Going the Distance

$3.8 million / $14.0 million

Doesn't look like this one will ever make back its budget, which is too bad; fun movie.

6. The Other Guys

$3.6 million / $112.7 million

Still going strong after six weeks, Sony and Columbia have to be happy about the staying power of The Other Guys. Why anyone greenlit this movie at a $100 million budget is beyond me, though.

7. The Last Exorcism

$3.5 million / $38.2 million

This one might be dropping down the charts pretty rapidly, but with a box office take of almost 20 times its budget, I doubt anyone's going to be complaining all that much.

8. The Expendables

$3.3 million / $98.5 million

I want TI and Stallone to get together with Warren G and Nate Dogg and make a movie called "Regulators".

9. Inception

$3.0 million / $282.4 million

I keep meaning to see this for the second time; it's still playing in IMAX at the local theater. Still can't quite drag myself over there, though. Looking forward to the Blu-Ray, however. Pretty rare for a non-sequel, non-licensed movie to get up into this box office range, so congrats to Chris Nolan.

10. Eat Pray Love

$2.9 million / $74.6 million

Julia Roberts can still take a crappy movie and make $75 million out of it. Give that much to the lady.

Please, people, stop encouraging Paul Anderson to make more R.E movies.

You're just making me think Event Horizon was a fluke...

Wow, this is the ninth week Inception has been on the top ten. Anybody think it can hold on for one more weekend? Or will the four wide releases coming out this weekend bump it off?

I think it'll drop off this weekend. Everyone who wanted to watch it probably has seen it multiple times by now.

I think we might have to say goodbye to Inception. Had a damn good run though.

Will the release of Inception on Blue Ray/DVD be delayed in any shape or form due to it's 9 week theater run?  I was never clear on how that worked.  Does a specific amount of time have to pass after it exits theaters before it can hit retail stores for sale?
Ronaldon Sept. 13, 2010 at 8:10 a.m.
With both Machete and The American crossing their budgets, they are pretty much guaranteed to make their money back factoring in marketing. Maybe if more movies were well made on smaller budgets more movies would be money makers.

They'll release it when they feel like releasing it. Some DVDs are announced and released within three months of theatrical debut. Some take six months to a year. As far as I know, Warners has not announced a release date yet. If I remember, The Dark Knight may have made something like $500,000 in theaters the week it was released on DVD. There is no set period of time for theatrical to DVD on movies. It all depends on the studio and how they feel about the film. They don't want to release the film on DVD too early because it can cannibalize the theatrical run, but not too late that people forget about the movie.

I was sort of hoping we'd have a movie come early in the summer that stayed until fall, like The Hangover last year. Inception's probably the closest thing we've got to that this year.
joetenacon Sept. 13, 2010 at 8:30 a.m.
At least Nanny McPhee Returns isn't on the list.

What if Wes Anderson made one?

@Rorie: Are you just guessing that word of mouth for The American is poisonous, or have people really said that they've hated it?  I figure that the movie is riding on a) not having any real competition and b) starring George Clooney.  That's enough to make $25 mil in two weeks, easy.

I liked that Machete was all up in everyone's face with its politics. It wasn't the greatest movie but I still thought it was fun and funny. I'd like to see more violent action/revenge/political satire films.

$6 of that $27.7 million for Resident Evil were mine. Sorry, everyone.

The DVD is coming 6th December according to Amazon UK and Play.com, although you always have to take retailer listings with a grain of salt.

Hey, at least it'll probably drop way down or off the list next week, the review scores are really gonna hurt it.

I hate to bring up the Scott Pilgrim Box Office topic again, but how much of a fucking tragedy is it that the movie made less than the fourth fucking Resident Evil movie?

I'm definitely seeing machete this weekend.

Actually, then it would be 145 minutes long and be pretentious as hell.
God I hate Magnolia.
