We're Heading Back To Silent Hill

Sequel to 2006's scare-fest moves forward.

At least it can't be any worse than Resident Evil: Afterlife, right? ...Right?
At least it can't be any worse than Resident Evil: Afterlife, right? ...Right?
I have a bit of a soft spot for 2006's Silent Hill movie. It wasn't perfect, no, and it veered a bit too far into explicit violence near the end of it, but for the most part it was a creepily effective what-the-hell-is-that-sound experience, and it's still a hell of a thing to watch in a dark room. So consider me tentatively excited to hear that a sequel, called Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, has apparently been greenlit (according to Bloody Disgusting), under the auspices of one Michael J Bassett, an apparently British writer/director whose work I am not immediately familiar with.

Here's Bloody Disgusting's plot synopsis

The sequel follows heather Mason, along with her father, who have been on the run - always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn't full understand, Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

So that's pretty much the video game Silent Hill 3 in a nutshell. At least they'd have something effective to work from. If the title didn't tip you off, this is planned as a 3D adaptation, which could possibly work: seeing Pyramid Head or some of those other freaks in full 3D would be neat, assuming they don't overdo the "stuff flying at the screen" motif.

I wasn't a fan of the original Silent Hill movie, but I know a lot of people who say it was alright.

I enjoyed the first Silent Hill. I thought it kept true to the game and I was scared during it. Of course I scare easy and I was alone in the theater.

I'm betting that the 3D will utterly destroy the atmosphere of the film (which is one of the few things the first film did quite well).

I always try and stay one step ahead of forces I don't full understand as well but I don't really care about this movie sequel.

I am super excited about this!

I loved the first silent hill movie; it stuck fairly well to the source material. I love the games and everything about the mythos, so a new movie suits me down to the ground. :)

I felt oddly attracted to the first film. I remember the plot being incoherent, but the imagery and cinematography were unique (and who can forget that atmosphere...).

Who didn't see this coming?

I enjoy the series, and I enjoyed the first movie; however I'm not happy that they're taking this next one 3D. If this year's gang-bang assault of 3D films on our faces hasn't been an indication - 3D movies suck, especially franchises (Saw, Resident Evil....Silent Hill).  :(

Love this movie, not excited about the 3D, but you can expect me to write it up as part of the grand tradition i've started with the first one.
Can't wait, but the new talent has me tentative

Edit:
Ok wait. I'm thinking about it now, and doing this plot will make it not work in accordance with the first movie. Is this counting as a reboot? Because Silent Hill, the first one, took a lot of the first game, only without the part where  SPOILER WARNING: Click here to reveal hidden content.

@MetalGearSunny:  Well, the first movie didn't exactly make a ton of money, bringing in less than $100 million worldwide, which probably means it wasn't profitable when you count in advertising and prints. DVD probably helped, but it wasn't a huge success or anything.

The first half of the Silent Hill movie was great. Sadly, they turned it into lolsatan at the halfway point and totally ruined it. Seeing as how they dumbed it down a lot and changed things for the worst, I really don't have a lot of faith in this one. I mean, a lot of they Heather storyline isn't even possible without retconning the hell out of the first film. That tells me they will most likely go in a different direction with it. Being different is fine, but if it is going to be as half-assed as the first film then I don't care to see it. Besides, they will probably completely ditch the Vincent/Heather conversation in the chapel. You know, the one that has one of the creepiest lines ever uttered in a video game.

Don't know if I've said this on the site yet but...Resident Evil Afterlife was a really enjoyable film. Nonsensical 3D shenanigans, slow-mo all over the place and a hearty dose of nonsense. I hope Alex sees it and we can get some discussion going over Matt's hate of that film. Based on that Quick and Dirty, I blame alcohol and general exhaustion for negatively impacting Matt's experience.

@Rorie: Wait, really? Didn't know that. Perhaps I get Resident Evil and Silent Hill confused.
CashBaileyon Nov. 4, 2010 at 5:57 p.m.
Bassett did the decent-but-unspectacular adaptation of SOLOMON KANE for Samuel Hadida, so I guess he got the inside track on that job.

My biggest worry is that Roger Avary appears to be writing it again, and the script was the most crippling aspect of the awful first film.

Oh. 3D.

Suck my dick. 3D blows.

Silent Hill 3 was my personal favorite of any of the Silent Hill games, so naturally this news horrifies me.  Without a reasonably faithful adaptation of the first movie to stand on, the plot is just going to seem ridiculous and won't have any impact.
Olivawon Nov. 5, 2010 at 10:14 p.m.
Oh yeah, great. Just go ahead and skip Silent Hill 2, the best story in the series.

Awesome.

Fuckin' a.

To me that game was a complete cluster-f**k.

Eh, personal opinion.  I personally enjoyed the story way more than SH2.
