Screened News

What To Watch: July 20, 2010!

This week'll be easy on your pocketbooks, kids.

Hey guys! It's Tuesday, which definitely means that it's time to go buy some DVDs. Or, you know, not. It's pretty slim pickings this week. Unless you really, really want to buy Cop Out.

DVD Releases

1. Cop Out

Lie bot, what's the saddest thing about Cop Out? Could it be the fact that this is screening at Comic-Con in "Maximum Comedy Mode"? With Kevin Smith and Seann William Scott "enhancing" it? Yeah, that's probably the saddest thing.

2. The Losers

Alex sure didn't like it. I dunno, Zoe Saldana with guns? Can we really trust this Alex character?

3. Mother

Alex sure liked it. I dunno, this was directed by the guy who did The Host, which was pretty bad. Can we really trust this Alex character?

4. The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers

Gripping, thrilling action leaps across the...ah, hell, this seems like a pretty important subject. Maybe I'll check it out when it inevitably pops up on Netflix.

5. Prodigal Sons

So a filmmaker comes back to town ready to out herself as a transgender lady and re-connect with her estranged adopted brother, who might be the grandson of Orson Welles. Pssshshs, that's so farfetched...oh, it's a documentary.

6. The Runaways

Girls making out, I guess. There's that.

7. Cats & Dogs

I think I'm in line to review the sequel, so I guess I need to rent this and make sure that I'm up to date on the thrilling exploits of...schnauzers.

8. Evil Aliens

Not many movies have official descriptions that detail alien impregnations. Nor do many have the balls to call out Phantasm, Aliens, Dead Alive, and The Evil Dead and claim to be their "successor". So, yeah. Try and top that.

9. 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams

This movie has awesome ratings on Amazon...from a bunch of people who have only written one review on the entire site. So yeah, it's gotta be good!

10. Just Another Day

Marlo from The Wire is a rapper. Someone named Lamar "Lamar" (sic) says it "Doesn't get any more real than this" on Amazon. Take it from him, I guess.

11. Black Narcissus

Also out this week: Being Human: Season One, Forbidden World, Galaxy of Terror, Margot, The Red Shoes, Tin Man, Matlock Complete Series, Courage The Cowardly Dog: Season One, Degrassi: The Next Generation: You're Not Reading This Anyway, Desperate Romantics, Ground War, Jersey Shore Something Something, Look Around You: Season One (buy it!), My Boys: Second and Third Seasons, My Bride Is A Mermaid: Season One, Part One, Seriously Funny, and Super Friends!: Season One, Vol. Two.

Man, I could not disagree with those guys more about Louis CK stand up vs tv shows.

I love Louis CK and I digest just about every bit of material from him I can get, but in tv show form it falls a lot more flat and loses a lot of its fluidity because he can't simply tell it as a story, he has to bounce off other people and other restricting factors.

Also Louie (The show that is) seems to suffer from the same problem that Lucky Louie did, which is to say that it lacks new material - anyone fairly familiar with Louis CK's recent stand up or his apperances on the Opie and Anthony show can expect a lot of recycled stuff.

That being said for most people the show is totally worth the watch, he's genuinely hilarious and the poker scene that Matt and Alex were discussing is pretty touching/funny/disgusting.

I gotta see The Losers. That got some surprisingly rave reviews when it was out!

@korcan:  Bug Vinny! He's the decider there. But I'll be at Comic-Con for most of the week so it likely won't happen this week, unfortunately.

@Rorie: I can't give up on Warehouse 13 yet, though I'm close to it.  As for Covert Affairs, I'm only recording it because my wife loves Mohinder Suresh.  The only show on USA that I genuinely like is Psych, even though it's very, very stupid.

@Alex: Going to have to check out Louie.  Saw him at a comedy club in NY, and he was hilarious.  His other sitcom (on HBO, I think?) wasn't very good.

While I love this website and this isn't a knock against them at all, but it really irks me when they say thing like "It only made like 20 million dollars" when things really make like 44 million. Now that doesn't make Cop Out not be awful, I'm just a nerdy loser for correctness :)

That Mitchell and webb look is on tonight, so you UK guys and you guys who knows your way around the internet, should watch that.

" I'm a film major, and another kid who has the same major thought Cop Out was one of the best movies this year. He also thought the same about Grown Ups, Alice in Wonderland, and The Sorcerer's Apprentice. No joke. "

What...the....fuck!!!???

Rorie not liking The Host further extends the allegations that he has a cold black heart.

I sort of laughed at "Wipefall and Downout." MORE outrageous spooneristic wordplay, please. It's why I come here.

Louie's the best show on TV right now. It's an incredibly competent, honest supplement to his stand-up, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it surpasses it. At its best it shines completely on its own merits and offers an extra dimension of insight into what makes Louis tick, but too often it feels like it's intended specifically for people who aren't at all familiar with his style or routine (the recycled material point is valid), as an introduction to the stand-up.

Alex and Matt always have the best shirts.

@DeathByYeti:
No doubt. (words, not the band)

Once again I frown upon Matt Rorie's opinions. The Host is one of my favorite films of recent years.
