What To Watch: October 15th, 2010!

Weekend releases and weekend TV, oh my!

I've had some problems adding N-Secure to our database, but even if it's not in the list below, you still owe it to yourselves to check out its trailer. What an amazing piece of work. I'm not sure if whoever cut that trailer has ever seen one before. I mean, voiceover on top of dialogue? That's pretty special.

Anyway, here are the rest of the weekend's major releases:
1. Red

I'm super happy that RED is coming out, if only because it means that my favorite comic author, Warren Ellis, is gonna get some change in his pocket. Dude is legitimately one of the most imaginative writers working today, in any medium. RED is based on a really cool comic of his, but it's from the producer of Transformers 2 and G.I. Joe. Might be good, might be bad. We'll find out...together!

2. Jackass 3-D

I love the increasingly huge warning labels that these movies get slapped with. My biggest curiosity is whether the 3D actually adds anything to the experience here.

3. Hereafter

A limited release for Clint Eastwood's latest, but it'll be going wider next week. I was really looking forward to this until the trailer came out. I'm still looking forward to it, but slightly less so now; I hope it delivers on its general air of melancholy.

4. Conviction

Hilary Swank has her Oscar and now she wants another one! That's the general vibe I'm getting from this one, but I'm hoping it's good. This is a limited release (11 theaters), and I'm not sure how much wider it'll expand, but I'd expect it to be easier to find next weekend.

5. Down Terrace

Odd trailer, but I know Alex is really looking forward to this.

I am loving Boardwalk Empire, It admittedly started slow but things are deffinitely moving forward.

The scene with Omar last week was pretty brilliant.

The Good Guys is exactly a good show. And it's on Friday, not Saturday.

Rubicon had been a real slow burn. But all of the story lines are finally picked up and for the last few episodes it has been steamrolling along. Last week, we discovered what the Illuminati/Clover Society/Whatever's plan was as it came to fruition and Will figured it out in a Watchmen way. This episode, there is a target on pretty much every character in the series. And all of the stories connected together last episode. The series was very methodical, and James Badge Dale just can't hold onto audiences the way Jon Hamm does on the slower episodes of Mad Men. Part of it is the actor, but a big reason is because Will is an off kilter character who has some underpinnings of insanity to him so it is hard to connect. In fact, pretty much every character in the show is not fully "right" in the head. So, they end up distanced from us. But overall, the series has been enjoyable in the consiracy story mixed with the team searching for terrorists using data analysis. And really, any show that can make people reading reports and going through data to find someone intriguing does have some merit to it.

I wasn't in love with Rubicon at first but after I watched like 10 episodes in a row I just started to love the conspiracies, the drama, the characters and really everything about it.  It may be one of the best shows on TV right now and I cannot wait to see all this shit that is going to happen in the finale.

IMPORTANT QUESTION: Is the warning label in Jackass also in 3D?

I'm pumped for Jackass 3-D. I love that whole franchise.

Only one I'm interested in is Red.

Red is a terrible, terrible comic. Cool concept, terrible execution.

Aw, no mention of Sanctuary on Syfy?

Hilary Swank already has 2, woman is greedy as hell.

Ghost Adventures is pretty bro-ey, but I still enjoy the hell out of it.  XD

Spoiler alert: Red looks like a bad movie!  I'm looking forward to Conviction... seems like a real tear jerker.  Those "I'm innocent yet I suffer in PRISON!" movies always hook me... just check out Felon

Hereafter has nothing to pull me in except for Damon and Eastwood... the premise and main character just don't suit my tastes but I have a lot of respect for the people involved so maybe I'll be turned around when I get to see it.

I remember seeing the ad for N-Secure before Clash of the Titans.  I appreciate what they were trying to do (it's the result of a program to inspire more black directors other than Tyler Perry) but the trailer seemed like a parody and my group was roaring at the dialogue.  It even showed before the cell phone ads and didn't have a green band before it.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
