What To Watch: The Depressing Laziness Of Super Bowl Commercial Recaps

Want to watch ads? Well, how about watching nothing but ads for an entire hour? Does that get your motor running?

I admit that advertising is a kind of art, in that creative people come together to make short films designed to move or amuse an audience, but I'd also posit that advertising as an artistic endeavour is fatally weakened by the fact that it's conceived with the desire to sell products to gullible people. Kind of like how childbirth is an amazing and wonderful thing, but then some people have babies solely to raise them to adulthood in the hopes of murdering them and selling their organs. Or so I hear.

Anyway, if you want to watch a bunch of ads, with other ads in the commercial breaks, you can find the latest installment of Superbowl's Greatest Commercials tonight at 8 on CBS. And may god have mercy on your soul.

American Idol: The Search for a Superstar

FOX 8 PM: The audition round this time is from Portland, Oregon, so be on the lookout for a lot of odes against the fascist patriarchy and how we should get rid of highways in favor of bike lanes.

Top Chef

BRAVO 10 PM: "Pee-Wee Herman stops by for some special pancakes; the chefs are given a bike challenge to find ingredients for Pee-Wee's dinner party." Oh man, that just makes me sad. :(

Whitney

NBC 8 PM: "When Alex becomes jealous of one of Whitney's co-workers, the two decide to try couples therapy; Mark and Roxanne realize they make good partners while at Lily and Neal's game night." 14 episodes in and they're already in therapy. I hope they break up. Followed by Are You There, Chelsea? at 8:30.

Mobbed

FOX 9 PM: "Howie and more than 100 strangers help Tim apologize to Nick, his brother and band mate; special appearances include musician Art Alexakis, dance group FORMALity, drummer DJ Ravi and rapper Ace Hood." I guarantee you that all of these people will be dead in a year. In other words, I'm fervently hoping to make the Mobbed curse a thing.

I saw an ad for the Super Bowl Ad program last night and while I'm not opposed to watching ads (they can be creative, funny) I don't know why Jillian Michaels is one of the hosts. Like, somehow, that's enough to make me not want to watch.

One Tree Hill is what I'm watching!

ddenselon Feb. 1, 2012 at 11:38 a.m.

Really? Boomer Esiason and Jillian Michaels was the best they could do? Were Terrell Owens and Carmen Electra too busy?

CharAznableon Feb. 1, 2012 at 12:15 p.m.

I just picked up Space Pirates and Zombies, I think I'll obsess over that for a while tonight.

Sammo21on Feb. 1, 2012 at 12:33 p.m.

I don't find Whitney Cummings funny at all. Other than her name.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
