What to Watch: Weekend of August 20th!

Welcome to the end of the summer, AKA Hollywood's second dumping ground.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy. It's the end of the summer, and you know what that means, right? Yep! A dumping ground for kinda not-so-great movies that studios couldn't find another spot for, and endless reruns leading up to the fall TV season. Well, it ain't all bad. There's a couple of decent flicks and some solid Sunday TV, if nothing else. Check out the video for the full slate, or just look below for the movies hitting theaters this weekend.

New Releases: 08/20

Vampires Suck

Rating: PG-13
Release: Wide
Hey! We totally reviewed this! No! You should not go see it!

Piranha 3-D

Rating: R
Release: Wide
Full review and a Quick and Dirty coming a bit later today, but this one seems like it's probably the highlight of the weekend...such as it is. I'll give the movie this: It promises copious amounts of naked boobs and blood galore, and it delivers on both. Shame the 3D isn't better, but if you like campy horror, and don't mind it being a little overly knowing about it, this ain't a half bad watch.

The Switch

Rating: PG-13
Release: Wide
This movie has evidently been sitting around in release-date hell for a while now, but praise some kind of lord, because now we can experience Jennifer Aniston getting turkey baster pregnant. Again, review and Q&D later today, but Rorie saw it and said it was forgettably charming...so there's that.

Nanny McPhee Returns

Rating: PG
Release: Wide
Hey! Remember Nanny McPhee? Me either. I know I saw the first movie on a plane, but I'll be good goddamned if I can remember a single thing about it, beyond all the ugly makeup they put on Emma Thompson. Not gonna lie, I have no idea when we'll get around to reviewing this. Is anyone around here going to have a conniption fit about that?

Lottery Ticket

Rating: PG-13
Release: Wide
Oh, right, Bow Wow has an acting career. I keep forgetting about that. Also, when did Ice Cube go from starring in movies alongside John Witherspoon to straight up BEING John Witherspoon? I don't get how he is doing old man roles now. He was in NWA. He's not supposed to get old.

Mao's Last Dancer

Rating: PG
Release: Limited
Based on the autobiography of a Chinese national ballet dancer who defected to the US (for the love of a woman, of course), this true-story-drama has Bruce Greenwood, Joan Chen, and Kyle MacLachlan in it. Most of the reviews aren't super great, but hey, Rex Reed called it "a masterpiece." So...there's that...

The Tillman Story

Rating: R
Release: Limited
The highly controversial documentary about the US government's attempt to purportedly cover-up the true nature of pro-football-player-turned-soldier Pat Tillman's death in the Afghan war. Critics are loving it, but who the hell knows when/if it might open wide enough for any of us to see it. Seems like something I'll probably end up watching on Netflix Instant.

I will check out Piranha if I can get any of my friends to see it, and I will definitely check out the Tillman story when it inevitably goes to streaming.

I heard Keith David is in Lottery Ticket.  That should give it 2 stars right off the bat right?  Anyway, Eureka is on tonight and Leverage is on Sunday night.

thanks for the John Witherspoon drop :P

Friday isn't exactly the weekend, that being said I look forward to Piranha, and The Tillman Story.
Catastrophicon Aug. 20, 2010 at 8:12 a.m.
Idk why but Piranha 3d is getting a late showing here. It's only in cinemas on the 2nd of September. I might see it, over the top violence and nudity, hooo-ray! Haha.
President_Barackbaron Aug. 20, 2010 at 8:49 a.m.
Sad to here that Mao's Last Dancer isn't reviewing well, I feel bad for Kyle MacLachlan and his non-existent post Showgirls career.

Haha, I love these.

You guys are great.

I don't think there's anything purported about it, they tried to cover it up.

I only said that because frankly, I'm not well-versed on the whole story so I didn't want to sound like I was leaning one way or the other without knowing what I was talking about.

Do Matt and Alex live together?
Parsnipon Aug. 20, 2010 at 10:06 a.m.
Alex says and writes "so there's that" a lot.

He also rocks in his chair in every whiskey media office video. It's quite funny in the makerbot video at tested. :p

Strange man, this Alex person.

Like this...but naked and in 3D.  Totally worth $13.

@skrutop: Dude, you serious? I've been on the fence about Piranha 3D but this might sway me...

Also this has to be one of the worst box office weekends ever, probably since that weekend in 2008 where nothing else opened but Bangkok Dangerous. Maybe if Scott Pilgrim opened this week, it could've done a bit better...

Tillman Story interests me the most out of all these, and Alex, please don't worry about reviewing Nanny McPhee Returns. Pretty sure we can forget about that movie and move on with out lives.

Children's Hospital. Always.

I'm kinda excited for Piranha 3D. Not for the 3D part, but for the rediculous end to the trailer where a guy gets sidelined by what is basically a flying Piranha. Oh man. Sequel material right there. Piranha 3D2: Fish Out of Water. ^.^
KamikazeCaterpillaron Aug. 21, 2010 at 4:16 a.m.
Yay for Star Trek.

Sacha Baron Cohen tries to recapture the glory of his prior foreigner-in-America culture comedy, but a lack of heart and diminishing returns on the successful gimmick turns this into a movie of decent jokes a decade too late.

The Avengers promises the world and does its best to deliver. Can Earth’s Mightiest Heroes save themselves from the problems and excesses of the Marvel Studios initiative? They’ll certainly go down trying.
