Will Smith To Team Up With Son In Shyamalan Sci-Fi

Will Smith and Jaden Smith to star in M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi project.

You are forbidden to go into the woods, young Jaden.

We’ve all known for a while that M. Night Shyamalan and Jaden Smith were teaming up for a sci-fi that Jaden’s father, The Fresh Prince, would produce through his production company Overbrook. Now it appears Will has decided to not only produce but star alongside his son in the film. Deadline is reporting that Sony has signed the elder Smith for the still untitled sci-fi flick. The script for the project was penned by Shyamalan and Gary Whitta and, of course, Shyamalan will direct. Here’s a quick synopsis:

“The story takes place far in the future where a young boy has to navigate an abandoned planet on a space ship that has crashed. On board is his estranged father. ”

This will be the second time the Smith duo has starred in a film together, with the first being  The Pursuit of Happyness. Will jumping on board is probably the absolute best thing that could have happened for this picture. The man knows how to open a movie and without him there was no guarantee this one would have been a success at the box office. The Karate Kid  remake did exceptionally well, but Jaden's still a little young to be carrying a sci-fi like this on his own. And, well, we all know about the troubles Shyamalan's been having at the box office.

I can only hope that we'll get some kind of music video for this one that'll feature the entire Smith clan. Who doesn't miss the days of Big Willy Style? You know you wanna get jiggy with it one more time...

Oh hey, Gary Whitta helped write this? Fuck, man. Maybe it won't be so bad?

Look as long as the planet they crash land on doesn't turn out to be Earth I think it'll be fine.

I really hope that Will pulls Shyamalan out of his slump instead of Shyamalan pulling him into one.

I like Gary. He seems like a nice guy on the Tested podcasts.

I hope this isn't bad.

Is Shyamalan powerful enough to bring down the awesomeness of Whitta and Smith? Hope not.

If Shammy is directing they should just name it CAREER SUICIDE.

Considering how poorly Shyamalan handled the action and effect in AIRBENDER I shudder to think how he would handle a big sci-fi project.

Gary Whitta? He's one bad Shyamalama.

I really enjoyed The Book of Eli, and I want Whitta to have another successful movie, but Shyamalan and Jaden Smith are keeping this from being a must-see for me. I hope later developments push more positive elements onto the film.

Maybe get Reznor to do the soundtrack?

Make us proud Whitta, make us proud.

I really hope Gary Whitta told M Night Shamalan to "Use More Skill"

Will Smith, not Will Smith.

That is, Willard Smith, not Verlin William Smith of Tested fame.

Well, I like Gary Whitta.

I am very skeptical because M. Night is attached to it... but I will see as time goes on.

Oh, the black Will Smith.

I like Gary Whitta as a person, but hated Book of Eli.

A film written by him, directed by Shyamalan, with a double dose of the Smiths DOESN'T have me excited.

I like Gary Whitta and Will Smith but I don't like Jaydan Smith or Shyamalan.

I guess I'll have to see what comes from this.
MiniPatoon April 4, 2011 at 4:13 p.m.
The movie will star Will Smith, Jaden Smith, and Jaden's father Will Smith.

If Gary is writing I'll give it a chance. Saw Book of Eli awhile back and thought it was pretty good.

Dig Deeper into Gary Whitta

Originally a video game journalist, Whitta was a writer for ACE, and later the editor-in-chief of PC Gamer. He has written a number of screenplays and TV episodes, most notably episodes of Star Trek: Voyager and Futurama, as well as the 2010 movie The Book of Eli.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
